Subject: Why ME ??? IP: Logged
Message: My sunny skies are getting grey. In case nobody remembers I changed my torque converter recently and my 94 Dakota ran like crap. so I opend it up to see if it had jumped time. appearantly during the reassembly the lower radiator hose was not connected and no coolant added. This error was not noticed for a week since I didnt take the truck out of town and only drove short distances so it never got to hot. This all ended the day I decided to take my trailer full of the wifes precious garage sale crap to the dump. Half way to the landfill area and the temp gauge is in the red. Had to pull over and pop the hood and when I did I found the lower radiator hose was not on the nipple. No stations around but there is a canal with water flowing. Dunked a antifreeze container in and returned to the truck with it full of nice cool water. Truck had shut down by then and when I poured that water into the radiator it produced a little gurgling and then one big belch of steam. once this stopped I was able to replace the cap and the truck started. drove to the nearest station and pulled up to the water recepticle to find that this establishment must be importing its water and if I want some I need to deposit .75 cents and I do because I'm desperate and my truck demands it. Of course in my haste I deposit my three quarters before being ready. This was important since I still had to raise the hood and secure it open the over flow container and begin filling it while attemting to also cool the water pump area on the front of the motor. Had I already been ready I may have had enough time to complete this before the water shut off requiring that I deposit a second set of quarters. Of course going inside and asking the clerk if he can turn it on again nearly caused me to not even get him to change paper into coins. Appearantly water is free if you are buying gas, but if you are not a customer water and air are not free and my initial .75 cents does not entitle me to the same benefits reserved for gas pumping customers. After the cops explained this to me they convinced Abdul to kindly turn my paper into rubles so I can deposit it into the moisture dispensing bandit. And since I was ready this time around I only used a portion of the water and dumped the rest on the ground while the local authorities allowed their dog to quench his thirst by slurping it off the hot asphalt. Once this fiasco was over I pulled my truck and trailer back onto the two lane road and headed for the dump. Needless to say I didn't make it. I had managed to get about a mile away from Abdul when everything shut down. By the time I made it home I pulled the plugs and had water in cylinders 3,4,&6. Pulled the engine and headed to Pic n Pull to see about a replacement. But someone had already been there and every 5.2 litre 318 had already been removed. WHY ME?? Headed home and started cleaning my weapons. A friend called and told me about this "liquid glass" stuff so I went to Auto Zone and purchased K&W block and head gasket sealer and a head gasket kit. Went home and put my engine back together, dropped in back into the truck flushed the radiator and added this Liquid Glass stuff. Fired it up and let it idle for 30 minutes before taking it out for a spin. When I got back home and checked the oil I couldn't believe that it was like new oil. Incredible!!!! BUT.....I had a job to look at about 70 miles down the highway and when I exited the freeway I noticed that my oil pressure was low and that the idiot light was flickering. I then noticed that when I accelerated the pressure would go up and the light went out. When I was done I haeded for the freeway to return home and I noticed the same problem. If I kept the rpms up the oil pressure would stay high enough to keep the light from comming on. The truck ran good at 70-80 mph all the way home and when I exited the freeway and stopped the idiot light come on and the pressure would drop. The temp gauge was barely off the line but there was also no thermostat since the K&W directions said remove it. I parked the truck and decided that my problem must be with the oil pump. Dropped the pan and discovered that the liquid glass had worked so good that it had begun to close that pesky opening at the bottom of the oil pump and was caked onto the screen blocking the flow of oil to the motor. I cleaned this light grey sludge out of the pan flushed the pump and reinstalled everything. Took the same 70 mile trip again and CRAP the same problem with the oil pressure again. SO NOW WHAT??? Already cleaned my weapons, listened to the wife puke on my miricle repairs and piss on my cornflakes, SO NOW WHAT??? Get more liquid glass and mix it with some cool aid, get the wife to drink it and hope it shuts her up like it did my truck?? Hmmmmmm.... Maybe Abdul likes cool aid too....

Message: When you find water in cylinders, nothing poured into the engine is going to fix it. If you had the engine out and/or apart, the best thing is to fix it right. the heads are pretty beefy and probably not warped. New gaskets might be all that was necessary. Do a compression check. If its good, drain the oil and refill with the cheapest oil you can get. Then add seafoam or other internal engine flush solvent. Circulate the engine flush by idling, don't drive it. Drain the oil and refill with good stuff. Put your themostat back in and check the oil pressure.

Message: Howard, That's a very colorful story! LOL
I've never been a believer in any of those "remedies in a can". I'd try to flush the crankcase, drop the pan for inspection then try again. This time though use a mechanical pressure gage to check the oil pressure. If that stuff plugged the pick up screen it could have just as well plugged the oil pressure sending unit.
Good Luck.

Message: Thanks for the advice Daddio, and why not. Im going to drain the oil and drop the pan to see if the pump can be either cleaned or maybe just replace it with a new one. Then I will also flush the engine before I drive it again. The motor sounds good even when the oil pressure drops, but I don't want to take any chances. I did check compresion and six cylinders were above 90lbs and the other two where below 30lbs. The two low cylinders where the ones with water so there probably is a problem with the rings. The truck has over 215,000 miles on it but the engine only has about 85,000. If the problem gets expensive I might have to donate it to Abdul via his front entry. Pay attention to the news to see how this story ends. We may find out how they like having a Dodge Dakota fireworks display for the upcomming holiday. I'm kidding of course. I wouldn't use my Dakota, I'd rent a Ford.... LOL

Message: Yes, that was a very interesting read.Although i would be leaning toward the fact that the fix might not be permenant. But i would be interested to see exactly how long it does last.......Good luck Howard and keep us posted.

Message: Howard, are those 2 cylinders reading 30 psi adjacent to each other? Could be just a head gskt. But, 90psi does sound kinda low for having just 85k on the motor.
Yeah, i'd rent a Frod for Abdul too. Don't want to waste good product on something like that.
