my '03 4.7 died at idle late yesterday in traffic. Started it back and didn't have anymore trouble. My wife said it quit on her once earlier this week. Any thoughts on what to check first?

Two things can commonly cause this - a dirty IAC (idle air control) on the TB (don't twist the plunger when you clean it); or low voltage causing a loss of idle memory (often the first sign that the battery is going or other charging problem.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I agree with Kowalski, my first thought was your battery. These dakotas dont like a battery thats even a little undercharged. I guess thats probably true for most newer vehicles.

thank's for the heads up on the battery. My Dak is an '03 with the original battery. Never had a problem with starting it but I guess it's time to replace it.

update - I installed a new battery and it seemed to improve for a while but still sputters and died once at idle last week. I guess I'll move on to checking the IAC as suggested above.
