Subject: A/C cycling off constantly IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1995 Dakota SLT and something just isn't right with the A/C this year. The compressor comes on and turns for about two or three seconds, then cycles off. Upon attempting to add R134A, I find the gauge goes down to 25 when it is cycled on, and then it stays off until it gets up to 55. No refrigerant was actually added, it wouldn't take any so I assume that it is full.
This leads me to believe that there is some kind of temperature sensor or something that is busted. What could my problem be? If there is a sensor, where is it located? It sucks being in 90deg weather and the air won't even cool down!

Message: Sounds like the low pressure cutoff switch is working properly. 25 psi is too low while it's running that's why it cycles off. The low side should get up to around 40 psi when running depending on ambient temp.
When the compressor is off and the sytem equalizied you should be somewhere between 90-100 psi. These are estimates and you may want to check a service manual for exact numbers.
My impression is that your system is still low on R134A.

Message: I think the orifice is blocked. I talked to a friend who works on tractor-trailers and he showed me how to short one of the sensors so that the compressor would run constantly so that it would suck in more refrigerant. Well we did this until the low-pressure side tube frosted up slightly, then allowed it to turn off for a few seconds. After several runs of this, we realized that it was not sucking in any more, so we're fairly sure the orifice is blocked and it need to be replaced. That means they have to suck out the old stuff, tear it down, replace it all, rebuild it, and recharge it. Guess it will be worth it though!

Message: Evacuate the system, change the drier and orifice tube and recharge and that should cure it. Sorry to here that. It's not that bad of a job though.

Message: Be sure to give us an update on this.
My personal exp. has allways been a high pressure reading with a blocked orifice.
(I'll be looking back for an update)

Message: Sorry for the delay in a reply, I was out of town for about three weeks. I have yet to fix the issue, and with another trip coming up soon, I may not get to it this time. I'll let you know what happens once I get back and have a few days.
