Message: Hopefully it will be replaced by the 5.7L Hemi, but who knows if it will have any immediate aftermarket support. It's probably going to end up a lot like the 4.7L. Might take a couple of years for the performance parts to show up.

A motor that is: cheaper to produce, more power, less emissions, more efficient, and smaller. You can count on them using it. Some people might be skeptical of it going to the 1/2 ton, but why wouldn't they? They have every reason to.

I don't want all the computer-control problems

plagued Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Dakota
owners. I would rather have the older, but less
troublesome 5.9 engine/46RE transmission combination.

As for computer control problems with the 4.7, I haven't had any problems with mine (30K on an '01) but then I have a 5 speed too. I do have an in at one of the local dealerships here, and I've got my man waiting to call me when the first 2500 with a 5.7 in it shows up - I told him I wanted the first test drive.

Message: Now this is just a hunch... But I bet they will keep the 5.9 going esspecially for the R/T for 03 atleast... I was reading in truck trend about the 5.7 for 03 and so far its only going to be offered in the super duty rams. The reason I think they're keeping the 5.9 is because in the same magazine they also do an article about the Dak R/T which is still a 5.9... Who knows. As much as I would love to wear the 5.7 badge if they put it in a Dakota I think it would be pretty neat if they kept the 5.9 going esspecially for the R/T. Highly doubtful but interesting to think about. If they dont keep the 5.9, of course, im not going to argue if they start packing the 353 under the hood of an R/T ;)

Message: No way on a 5.7 hemi in a 2003 Dakota. They probably won't get the 5.7 hemi in the 1500 series Ram until 2004. The 2003 2500 and 3500 Rams come standard with the 5.7 hemi, and they will be easilly sucking up all the production. They are almost ready to order 2003 Dakotas and there would have been news of that kind of change long before now, there would have to be some pilot/concept trucks like the SRT-10 ram that was shown all fall at the autoshows. 2002 was supposed to be the last year of the 5.9 but maybe they decided to keep it going a while longer, they still pretty much need the extra torque so the new 1500 Ram isn't too much of a dog until the 5.7 is ready for them, so they might as well keep putting it in the Dakotas and Durangos.

Message: its hard to think that they would even put the 5.7 in a lighter weight truck like the dakota these days. they have choked the 5.9 down to 250 HP (which everyone knows is really capable of much more)presumably for liability and safety reasons. i just dont see dodge putting 345 HP in a dakota unless its 4x4. i think too many people will get into accidents with it.
now pessimism aside...
i hope they do bring it out. 345 HP stock would kick some serious butt.

Message: Ford sells quite a few Lightnings for that kind of price and they are limited to very few dealers. The biggest Ford dealer in my state cannot sell SVT products, and if the Lightning was in unlimited production and available at all their dealers, they would sell 4 times as many. So I bet right now that SRT Ram production will be ahead of Dakota R/T production (about 2-3000 a year), which will also put it ahead of Lightning production.

SO IF YOU LIKE TO BURN OUT THEN DO NOT GET THE FULL TIME 4WD BECAUSE THE 5.9 V8 SEEMS SLOW BUT DONT LOOK AT THE SPEEDOMITER BECAUST YOUR AT HIGH SPEEDS. I HAVE BEN AT THE TOP STOCK SPEED OF 116 MPH . THE 5.9 IS THE BEST . IF YOUR GOING TO GET A DOKOTA GET THE 5.9 ONLY IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT THE POOR GAS MILEAGE . IF YOU DO THEN GET A SLOW CIVIC. A 4 NOCKER !!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe you said that Joe. If ya need Speed, Power and fuel milage get a 4.7L 5 speed.
Leave the slug (5.9) for the smelter. Well it's not that bad, but it's not all that either.
As far as the 116 mph, I drive my 4.7L about 20 miles to work and 20 miles back from work. I (when theres not anyone in my way) drive 120+ mph to and from work every day. The truck doesn't seem like it's going fast till about 133 mph.
And 7.3 seconds 0-60 isn't that the same as the 1965 50 hp VW Beetle. You can check the speedo at:
My Truck Pics
D.
Anyway D. asking about the LEACH pcm upgrade, the don't do them any more. I don't know why. KENNE BELL does do them and it made a world of difference in mine and it's a 2002. You can find out more from them at:

Message: Joey,
Oh I think I hurt his little feelins. I have a speedo shot on my web site that already disproves your carpoint post. Hell read on, and Elvis is in that shooting star that just went by. You spend to much time reading about stock items and fail to read the MODS on my truck. I don't have a chip, I have the Kenne Bell Optimizer II Computer Reprogram. Not only has the spark curve and rev limiter been moved to 6000 rpm, but the TOP SPEED was moved from 115 MPH (again carpoint was wrong) to 135 MPH. As for the 1/4 ET's you are looking at, they are for an AUTOMATIC STOCK. Mine is niether an AUTOMATIC or STOCK. DUH! And further more if CARPOINT can't get the SPEED LIMITER right i sure don't place no stock in there ET's.
You sure put alot of stock in car point huh. They sold you your Quad Cab 5.9 didn't they. They also sell beach front property in Arizona too, don't miss out on that. I made my decision to buy my 4.7 5 SPEED with the 3.92 REAR GEARS while riding with a friend of mine in the USA that blowed off a 5.9 R/T not once but red light to red light 3 times. BONE STOCK. For me seeing is believing, and I've seen, you've read it in a book or on the internet. I will be in Germany for another couple months and me and my 4.7 will be back over there, and I will drive to where you are at and let you show me what real torq is, just before you send it off to the smelter. I will be picking my truck up in Baltimore and driving to Colorado Springs, CO. So more than likely I will be passing the Getto you live in.
Look at the Daily Cruise Speed
