Subject: 4.7 question IP: Logged
Message: i bought a dodge dakota with mechanical problems. I got it running but it seems that guy before me swapped the motor. My problem is that the electrical stuff keeps the engine from running good. When i take off the crankshaft position sensor it starts and runs but shifts weird and is hard to start when i plug it back in doesnt want to start. So is there any way i could get the software reset or something for it work properly?

Message: first, pull the computer codes. used the key-on, key-off method or buy an ODB II reader. Let the codes guide you. If there are no codes, check the fuel pressure/pump. I belive the timing scheme may have changed around 2002 or 2003 (NCG vs non-NCG), this may be your problem if the engine has been swapped. get the numbers from the engine block so you can find out what year it is. What year is the truck? Do you have a transmission controller mounted at the front of the truck, behind the passenger side headlight? If I remember it right, the non-ncg motors have a separate trans controller mounted up front. The NCG motors don't, the trans is controlled from the ECM. If the motor has been swapped, you may need to swap the ECM too.
DO you know if the previous owner ever had it running right or is this a new problem?
If you can provide more info, it would be helpful.

Stevedak is correct about the camshaft timing scheme change in 2003 with the NGC.

Message: I have part numbers for all 2000 thru 2002 PCM units.
Give me the part number from your PCM, and I can tell you if it's your original unit.
Also, I have part numbers for intake manifolds thru 2004, so find the part number of the intake manifold. It's molded into the manifold, and it starts with 5301 or 5303. Give the whole number including any letters. If the intake manifold is the same year as the engine, we might be able to figure what year the engine is.
You should be able to take your engine numbers to any Dodge parts dept and they can tell you what year and model it came from.
