 Subject: what do yall think might be wrong?

i have a 98 dodge dakota with a 5.2 the other morning i got in my truck to go to work backed out the drive way put it in drive and started going...it wouldnt shift out of gear...but i can manually shift it and it works. the fluid and pilter are brand new...what could be the problem?
