my dad gave me his 1985 B150 Ram Van. We have had it since it was new. It has a 318 with two bbl carb and three speed auto. Back in 85' it produced 140 hp and 250 ft. lbs. of torque. And like anyone of you guys it aint stock.
Dynomax full length headers.. custom true dual exhuast with flowtechs (flomasters coming soon) and the exhaust exiting infront of the rear tires on both sides (like an old challenger). It also has a new distributer and accel coil.
So far it has racked up just about 300,000 miles on the V8 and seems like it could go much further. The number 8 cylinder is a little low on compression and some ENGINE RESTORER helps some, but the old beast still will spin the 30" all terrains from a stop!
future mods are gonna be new four bbl heads with 1.88/1.60 valves ($400/both), edelbrock perfromer intake and a edelbrock 650cfm carb that i already have.

I woudn't put to much new power on the old engine. The bottom might not handle the new found power.

But then you will have something else to build. Might be fun.

its not really to get more power... more or less a way to break it so i can have a reason to built the whole thing up... and i would be that much closer with the heads, intake, and carb.

....but i bet it can handle it easily.

One thing I would do different is not use the 360 heads on the 318 , you will lose you're compression and have less power than you have right now even with the 4 barrel. The 360 heads usually come in at 70-72cc and the 318 heads are 62-63cc. Check to see if you're heads on the 318 are #302 castings , if so use these because they work great on a 318 , mopar started using them in '85 and used them 'til the Magnums came around , it was one of the first "swirl port" heads and have proven to work very well on the smaller engines(273,318). Take the 302's to a machine shop and have them cut for 1.88/1.60's and broached behind the valve for air flow and do a mild port job on them , don't hog them out just smooth out whats there , #302's set up like this usually pull about 30hp more on a 318 compared to 360 heads milled to the same cc size. On the Performer if you use it with 360 heads port match it , the ports are kinda between 318 and 360 size so it kinda matches both , I picked up 3 tenths and 4 mph by doing this when I was running a performer on my 360 , If you use the #302 heads leave the intake alone. This engine is similar to a 318 I'm helping one of my friends with , it's the '86 318 out of my Ram and it's going into a '67 Dart that weighs a bit over 3000# , it should run 12.70-80's . It's got stock flat tops , decks milled so pistons are .012" in the hole , worked #302's like above , MP 268/272 .450/.455 cam , Performer and a 600 edelbrock , 904 with 3,000 stall and 4.10's with 26x10.5 M/T slicks.

i am not talking about the 360 heads. Dodge put a certain set of 318 heads on the 2 bbl 318s. These heads will only fit the 2 bbl intake manifold. In a catalogue for mopar parts in Mopar Action they sell 318 4 bbl heads for $400 a pair. The 360 heads where $500-600. Now for me to switch to a four bbl i would have to replace the whole top end. I am not looking to make as much power as possible because once again.. its a 300,000 mile van motor... just a little something to liven it up some.

I'm currently rebuilding my 318 and will be using the MP 268/272 cam (P4452761). The only problem is that I live in Australia and by the time these parts arrive from U.S. they cost a fortune to buy after the currency conversion has kicked in.

I have decided to use a cam mob to build me the same cam the only problem is that they need a detailed specifications chart.

If anyone has used this cam can you please e-mail me the specs for this cam to

abitzos@bestandless.com.au

thanks

MoparJoe If i had the #302 cast heads would it be worth doing what you listed to my 318? I have a 91 R/C Pre Mag TBI setup my with 98200 miles on it my goal is to get this thing to run 12's and still be a daily driver but i dont want to use juice or forced induction to get it there. What kind of gains and or loses would i see if i had somebody do what you listed.

Thanks

The 302's probably won't cut it - the Dart went 13.30's@103 with the set up I was talking about a few months ago and it weighs 3040#. Now it runs 12.60's@108 but has milled Edelbrock heads , RPM Air-Gap intake , 650 DP Holley , 284/.528 MP solid , 4.30 gears and 28x10.5 slicks.

If you want 12's out of the 318 I would rebuild the shortblock and have the decks milled so the pistons are at 0 deck height , run Edelbrock heads , MP 284/.528 solid , Air Gap intake with a 650 holley , some good headers , 904 trans with a 4,000 stall 9" converter , 4.56 gears , 28x11.5 slicks , and put it on a diet - try to get it close to 3300-3400# with you in it.
