Subject: white smoke IP: Logged
Message: i drive a 2000 dodge dakota 4.7L with 171,000 miles and about a month ago white smoke started to puff out at start up. at first i didnt think much of it but now it seems to be a little more each time.. would this be a blown head gasket? or possibly worn valve guides? any advice would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
steven

Message: white smoke usually indicates water/ antifreeze. blue smoke = oil.
how does your oil look?
have you been loosing coolant?
have you overheated the engine recently?

Message: it usually burns a little over a quart of oil a month. so when i change it it usually doesnt look bad at all. and i had the cooling system flushed a while back and check it every now and then and havent had to add any yet. but i'm not sure what just happened today i was driving home and went to pass a car and gave it MAYBE half throttle and the truck just seemed to lose all power. i let off and idled to a stop sign and the truck stalled out. it took about 15 seconds of pumping the gas while trying to start it before it started. i drove it straight to my mechanic but he was already closed. so i checked the code while i was there and it was P 0308 which is cylinder 8 misfire. does this somehow tie into the white smoke?

seriously
pull the dipstick check it for a milky substance
drain the oil an do the same
over 90% of the time it's a cracked head
or blown head gasket
