Message: just bought 2001 4.7L 4x4 dakota. for the most part in very good condition, but I am experiencing two problems . 1) idle speed goes up and down when any accessories are on. it is also very fast when warming up in morning. 2) tranny shifts very hard sometimes from 2nd to 3rd gear. neither problem is serious yet but could be later. should I have it looked at?

Message: My best guess is that the Throttle Position Sensor is bad. This will cause a fluctuation in idle (and sometimes other) speeds.

Message: Disconnect the battery and turn the key to start for about a minute. That will probably also make you lose your idle memory - so when you next start it back up, you'll have to give it some pedal until it relearns the idle.
I'm not sure that you will need to reset the computer though, I'd try it without doing that first.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Another easy check while your in the TPS area is to remove the 2 bolts holding the idle air controller (IAC) and make sure thats not gummed up.
Might want to change the 2 tranny filters and fluid too.

Message: Why not try the easiest thing 1st... check to see if the vacuum seals on the side of the TB are in good shape? $1.00 fix... I've had this be an issue on mine a couple times since I live in the desert and it dries everything plastic or rubber out!
