Subject: 4.7 Break-in? IP: Logged
Message: Any advice on a good break in procedure for my 4.7? The dealer said don't drive over 70 for the first 800 mi... But that was it and the guy seemed very clueless when I questioned it.
Thanks

Message: Welllllll,
I was nice to my Dak for the first, uhhhhh, 500, no 50 miles or so, then I decided that with everything under warranty, what the heck.
Been driving it 'like I stole it' ever since-no probs!!!!
Just think the guys and gals at Dodge city saw what they were building for me so they decided to do a GREAT job.
Good luck with your truck!!

Message: My Dealer told me,, Stay under 60 first 500 miles. I am not sure if thats in the owners manual or not, but I did my best ;-) I think the manual does say to try and avoid hard acceleration from a dead stop, but that one was a bit tough to no do! Funny thing is It says for the automatic its actually good to floor it several times while at highway speed. Of course they note, "with in reason , and in a controlled manner that does not create saftey issues"
I would just be easy on it the first 500 or so, thats what I did, I have 20k on mine now no problems so far. Of course I guess most of the damage we are all trying to avoid is the stuff that comes up later in the trucks life.

Message: I did want the manual said... light throttle for the 1st 300 miles with some full throttle acceration at highway speeds. They also recommend a few heavy stops to seat the brakes :o I'm not going to start towing until I get another 100-150 miles on her even thought the dealer said (if you can believe this) I could start towing from day one.
I've been keeping the RPMs at around 2,000 - 2,500 except for those highway bursts :) all city driving mostly with only two 10 mile 60 MPH+ highway runs. Just filled it up for the 1st time - 13.6 MPG, keep in mind in FL so I run with AC on all the time :( and have the 3.92 rear-end w/LSD (2WD)

Message: I checked with the AC/Delco Group at work today. They require/strongly recomend that all engines new or reman have their oil and filter changed at 500 miles. The agrees with what I have have observed and been taught.

Message: Drive it like you stole it, if you are not hard on the engine right away then it will be a sissy later and everytime you try to beat on it it will cry. I have had mine for a year and it has 19,625 and haven't had any problems just my out look.

Message: According to the owners manual, u shouldnt drive at constant speeds for the first 700-800 miles...ie. (highway driving) If u are on the highway, take your foot off the gas every once in a while, or punch it just to get the rpms moving around.
