Message: when i rev up my engine it sounds fine...but as the rpm's are returning back to idle i can hear the engine rattling pretty bad. while under the hood it sounds like it is coming from the right side valve cover...im guessing i need a new timing chain? maybe a tensior? anybody experience this problem? and how hard it is to change /fix

Message: Yes I have an 01 4.7 dakota with the same noise. It is driving me crazy! I thought it was the cat with stuff rattling around in it so I gutted it since the o2's are in front of it. Still there. I have headers on it and changed the gaskets and its still there. It sounds like there is a broken bolt inside the head close to the number 8 cyllinder broken and rattling around. It goes away when slight pressure is applied to the throttle but when I downshift or let off the gas it comes alive. The noise is definately getting worse with time. Been going on for over a year now. thing is it still runs fine and mileage is good. I haven't taken it to a shop yet but am pretty mechanically inclined as well as a couple of my friends and we can't figure it out. ANY HELP would be great. Good luck! I have about 119,000 on it

Message: my 05 4.7 has a rattleing almost knocking when first started. mechanic indicated the timing chain is oil prussurized and when starting the pressure is low, a spring helps. suggested jsut keeping up on the oil changes to ensure the noise/chain slapping doesnto get worse

Message: I just did my timing chain and tensioners at 190,000 miles. When I heard the rattling I had it done. The tensioners were completely worn down. You better have a mechanic do it unless your very knowledgable about OHC motors.

Message: Mine started that when it was only 2 weeks old. The dealer ended up replacing the head on that side. it solved the problem. He said it the manual told him to adjust the valve lash, but we all know that's not even possibe. that's why he replaced the head.
