Hi,

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab full time 4x4 with 3.55 lsd rear. The dealer just rebuilt/replaced the whole differential under warranty due to a howling noise. When I picked the truck up, the vehicle still made noise and developed a knocking/thumping when I would turn and a popping noise when I would brake. Took it back to the dealer and they said that the vehicle needed new axle shafts and that the pinion bearing was making noise. Picked the truck up after they put the pinion bearing in and the axle shafts and the axle whine/noise dissappeared, but a different pitch noise showed up while driving down the highway. The vehicle still thumped/knocked while turning and popped while braking. Went for a ride with service manager. Said that the cap was amplifing the noise and that some noise was normal. Also found rear axle shafts to have excessive play causing the thumping/braking issue. Could that excessive play be the reason why the truck has a higher pitch whine at highway speeds as well? Sorry for the long post, I'm just very frustrated with this situation. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think the dealer is playing straight with you. No "normal" noise like that in my truck - make them fix it right...

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. I will see what happens after they put the shims in.

if their techs can't do the job correctly they should have farmed it out to a competent shop. make them get it right.

ok, got the truck back yesterday and the popping noise from the brakes and the thud from the axle shafts moving in and out are gone. However, the axle still has a loud howl/whine and 65mph. The dealer says this is normal and that the fiberglass cap is amplifying the noise. Does anyone have a truck with a fiberglass cap and a lsd rear end? If so, is it noisy? I have a bedliner with a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet over the top of it. If I stuck a piece of foam between the bedliner and carpet do you think that would quiet it down?

differentials shouldn't "howl/whine" at any speed. that is not normal operation. tires maybe but no the diff.your dealer is trying to cover the techs incompetence.

you could blow a hole in his theory by removing your cap and see if the noise goes away, which i doubt it will.

well on my way back from lunch today the thud from the axle shafts moving back and forth came back and so did the popping in the rear brakes. They wanted to remove my cap and I told them no because no matter what they find, I need to have the cap on anyways and I think it should be quiet with the cap on. I wish I would have kept my 2000 quad cab. No axle noise with the open diff (even with the cap on), stereo sounded awesome, way more power out of that 00' 4.7L than the 4.7L in the 05'... Oh well, made my bed. Anyone know of a good Dodge dealer in Milwaukee, WI that is good with axles?

Hi Guys,

Thought I would give you an update. I got the truck back from the dealer and they put another new carrier in it. This is the 3rd carrier since Jan 09'...They tried to put a shim kit in with the last carrier to try to stop the excessive axle play and when they put the shims in it would bind up. So they found the carrier to be machined wrong and replaced that and did not put the shim kit in. Well the damn thing still whines at 50-70mph and there is still excessive play with thumping/thudding, brake shudder/popping...etc. So I have an appointment with the service manager of a different dealership next week so we will see what we come up with then.

Don't let them off the hook. I have a 05 dakota that does this also. Unfortunate for me is that my dealership closed it's doors and I have to pay out of pocket now.

WRONG.
The factory warranty is honored at ANY dealership per the Magnuson-Moss act.
IOW, you can buy your truck in NY and have the dealer in LA do warranty work.
The LA dealer is bound by law to do the work.

Diffs should make no noise.
It didn't make the noise when new, did it?
Do they have any other 05 Daks (or any other Dodge trucks) in the lot?
If so, take the manager for a ride in all of them.
I bet they refuse to do it.

hey, just to let you know, I had the same noise in my rear diff. when turning and it turned out that dodge dakotas require anti slip fluid that comes in a 4 oz. bottle and costs about $11.
I put it in and it went away.

only Daks with an anti-slip rear end require that additive
