 Subject: 4.7L - misfire/rough idle

Have had my 2002 4x4 QC 102K mi. in for service - Engine was running fine before lunch - 30 min. later start with rough idle. I believe the number 4 cylinder is not firing. there are numerous fault codes. they have checked plugs, coils, injectors, next is compression. Synthetic Oil changes 5-7,000 miles. could this be a valve or rings? Engine has always run very tight - no problems. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't expect it to be the valves or rings, given the milage and synthetic. Would help to know the trouble codes.

So bad news. The rocker arm was caught in the cam. cam is damaged and needs to be replaced. 2 valves have visibly been sucked in and heads need to be removed and sent out for reconditioning. Estimate is 2500.00 with no knowledge of what is happening in the lower half.
truck had limited compression in 2 cylinders and no compression in another one in bank one.
Top half can be redone but no warrenty was offered on the bottom half. This is a service station...have not brought it to a dealer..yet.
Options: 2500 to fix no guarentee bottom half is ok.
6200.oo for new motor with 12 month/12,0000 mile
71000.oo for new Jasper motor with 100,000 mile guarentee.
Do we fix or junk, very strapped for cash and have no idea where money will come from to buy new vehicle. Truck has 100,020 miles. New tires an shocks just put in. Interior is in excellent condiion. Exterior has minor scrapes. Mechanics say it is obvious truck has been well cared for.
