Message: There is a srt dakota planned with the Hemi but it's more like 2005-6. Just because there may not be a srt dakota until then doesn't mean the current Dakota won't get a hemi sooner. It would just be another option to check on the order sheet. Dodge is not truing to mke the Hemi some high cost super rare option, it's just the replacement for the 360, anywhere there was a 360 before is a canidate for the 5.7 hemi now. The 5.7 has greater production capasity then the 4.7 and costs less to build. It should end up being more common then the 4.7!

Message: Well, I just read an article in the latest Motor Trend. I don't believe everything I read, but it does make me worry. It stated that Dodge has a prototype of a new Durango based on the Ram out being test driven right now. They have actual photos of this vehicle in Mexico in full and they have photos of it in the U.S. with the usuall garbage glued all over it to disguise it. They claim that Dodge is building the new Ram based Durango because the Dakota is being down sized in 2004. Diamler-Chrysler also emailed me and assured me that there was no shortage of 5.9L engines and that they would continue to put them in the Dak R/T, Durango, Ram 1500, and Dak Quad Cab through 2003 and beyond. Has anybody else heard anything concerning this? I can't imagine downsizing the Dakota. The fact that it is a "midsize" is what makes it so versital. It will do almost the same work of a half ton and will handle and manuver as good as a compact. I guess I will have to buy a Toyota when and if this downsize takes place.

Message: Maybe motor trend is confusing the Dakota redesign with the new M-80 compact pickup. There Dakota will not be ready for 2004, the pics would have already been out by now. It was going to be ready for 2004 until they pulled the plugh on keeping the Durango and Dakota platforms together. The new Dakota would have been almost as big as a ram, so in a way they are downsizing form the original plan, but no necessarily from the current size. Personally if they could drop 500 pounds and be back to GenII weight it would be a plus in my book, hell the EPA Nazis would like it too!

Message: Well, first of all, I got my magazines mixed up. The article I read is in the December issue of SPORT TRUCK not Motor Trend. Look on page 23 and there it is the 2004 Durango. The article says,"with the next generation Dakota downsizing, the Durango will be distancing itself from the smaller pickup". The 2004 Durango will be built on the Ram platform according to Sport Truck Magazine. That would explain everything. Diamler Chrysler has refused to answer any of my questions concerning the future of the Dakota. The only thing they would tell me is that they would keep manufacturing the 5.9L and they would continue to put it in the R/T. They would not say for how long. With all the different tid bits of information coming from many different sources you can begin to figure out that they may be planning on dropping the MIDSIZE pickup classification. Why would they name a Ram based SUV a Durango if they weren't dropping the midsized SUV? Why would they drop the midsize SUV if they weren't dropping the midsized truck with it? I'm sure we will know the answer to all these questions by June 2003.

Message: All of the other suurces I have read say nothing about the Durango being Ram based. It is getting its own completely new platform that will be similar in size to the Ram but not Ram based. This is they whole problem of making the Dakota on the new Durango platform, it would be about the same size as the Ram.

Message: OK, here is the latest info. DC is putting the 5.7 in the Ram 1500 starting in January 2003 due to the 5.9 being a DOG and they know they can get top dollar for it. The 5.7 is also going in the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the N300 car. As far as the Dakota it may go away or stay the same size but the Durango will upsize in 2004 with the option of the 5.7 by then. DC is also toying with the idea of a small diesel in the Dakota but they are going to place a small diesel in the Jeep Liberty for 2004.

Chevy plans on building it's own midsized pickup based on the Trailblazer. they're calling it the "Colarado" and i think that if dodge does decide to go that route, they'll be in a bigger hole than they already are. they'd be stupid to take the dakota out when chevy is putting the colorado in.

I love the idea of a 5.7 in the Dakota (and would definitely consider purchasing one), but I hope the DC boys work on more competitive engines across the board - more power and efficiency from the 3.7 and 4.7 liter mills. Chevy's big inline six sounds like a great engine: Powerful with good fuel economy. An available turbodiesel on a Dakota (small, not a Cummins) would give Dodge some added versatility against Chevy too.

Message: I totaly agree with fdfx! Downsizing the Dakota is the stupidist thing I have ever heard of! Chevy has already anounced it's intentions on building a midsize. Why on earth would DC give this segment of the market up? It wouldn't surprise me if they did just that. The only things DC has done in the last 15 years that I think is intellegent is the Dakota, the 5.9L Cummins, and the Hemi. For almost a decade the Dakota was as usefull as a half ton truck as far as payload and towing capacity. During the 92-94 model years the reg-cab V-8 Dak could be opted with heavy duty suspension and a towing package that allowed it to have a larger payload and towing capacity than the 3/4 ton gas burner Ford. Why has DC allowed GM and Ford to catch up and now surpass Dodge in most areas of the truck segment?
Oh, DC Insider, where exactly are you getting your information? The reason I ask is because my inside connection has assured me that there are no near term intensions on ever putting the 5.7L in anything but the RAM Heavy Duty and possibly the Ram half ton. They could not tell me when or if the Dakota was going to be down sized. They did tell me there would still be a Dakota R/T with a 5.9L as late as 2004. They also said that there would NEVER be a 5.7L in a Dakota.

Message: Just bought a new 4.7L Reg Cab Dak. I test drove an R/T first. Then I test drove a 4.7L w/3.92 gears. Off the line the R/T felt better, but after 3000RPM the 4.7L feels like it pulls harder. With a little tweaking (posi track, catback exhaust, reprogram ECM, cold air induction, etc.) I think I can out run a stock R/T. This thing really needs posi-trac. With a rolling start at 10mph it lights the right rear effortlessly when you punch it. The one I test drove had posi and it hooked up. They didn't have the color I wanted with a 4.7L and posi-trac.

Or does it just come on when you run the AC? Has anyone done a before and after run at the track to see if there is any gain in HP? I've only had this truck 36hrs and I already want to start wrenching on it. Message: Well from what I've seen Balck Hemi must have a 2wd and Sid must have a 4wd, thus the difference in EPA mileage. You can see various window stickers for 1500 Hemis by searching for different large dealerships that post inventory on the web from the Dodge website. For each truck on the lot there is usually a link to that trucks specific window sticker. There are quite a few showing up on lots right now, 2wd, 4wd, RC, QC, the works. Still no mater what the options are a 2wd Hemi ram is rated 14/18 and a 4wd Hemi ram is rated 13/17 as far as EPA goes.
Still a 6.98 0-60 for a 4x4 Quad is looking pretty good, did you do a full 1/4 mile run? That would be a better indicator of performance, on a g-tech it should be within .3 or .4 of reality.

Hopefully the Dak will get a 3.0Lor 3.5L version with a bit more boost. I have to admit I would prefer to have a scalled down cummins though. I also think that the 5.7 would be awsome option on the QC Dak.

I kicked it into passing gear at least 10 times, burned a little rubber a couple of times, a few red light runs and about 150 miles of interstate at 80mph for a total of 270 miles and 14.92 gallons of gas.
It only has 500 miles on it. I figure it will be hitting 20mpg by the time it hits 20,000.
