Hey guys. My name is Brad and I've worked at the local oil change in my neighborhood for about 10 years now and I've been under about 33,000 cars looking back at all the paperwork we've stored. Not joking guys, I'm serious. I've seen a lot and I still learn something new on a regular basis. I know this. You will not go wrong using the oil that the manufacturer recommends. My boss is taking 20W50 off the shelf because so many people abuse it. It's good oil for it's purpose but not in these newer cars. We've honestly had motors blow up at around 140,000 miles using it. That's good miles but nothing compared to what can be reached. The majority of our customers with high miles on their automobiles use the recommended weight. I know a guy right now with an S-10 pickup and he has about 375,000 miles on it. We've changed oil on it since it was new. He's never used anything but 5W30 and he's just one case. There is not enough space in this box for me to tell all the autos with high miles I've seen using the right oil. I've also had customers come back in mad at me because his car manufacturer voided his warranty when he had his motor worked on. They asked him what kind of all he had been using and he told them 20W50. This was a newer style car and it required 5W30. They told him he just voided his warranty. If I step out on a limb and use what I want and the motor tears up then I'm on my own but If I use the recommended weight then it's on the manufacturer. I've been under cars when I had to keep a towel over my head to keep oil from dripping on me. They had used 20W50 since it was new. These cars didn't have many miles either. We would use the right gas and we would use the right transmission fluid why do people have such issues with the right oil. If a motor tears up early with thin oil then it was a manufacturer defect strictly a coincidence nothing more. One in a million. I've worked on enough to know. My boss only kept thick oil on the shelf for cars that were wore out. Leaking more oil then you could put in them. It was not for perfectly good motors. I've got 233,000 on mine right now and there is nothing wrong with my motor at all. Some folks like higher oil pressure. Would you want higher blood pressure? No of course not. One guy told me that he gets higher oil pressure when he used thicker oil and I'm like, sure I know. Your oil pump is having to work harder to pump it. Of course that needle will shoot up higher. But the bottom line is, using oil that is thicker then what the car manufacturer recommends can lead to severe engine damage. It can shorten the motor. Not so much on older cars maybe but it will on the newer ones calling for 5W20 and 5W30. I've had cars come in calling for 0w20. Thick oil will not blow it up on the first oil change. It's a slow process but it will shorten the life of these newer motors. I am only telling you guys what I've seen. These new motors were testing under extreme conditions. If 10W40 and 20W50 put the most miles on the autos then that is what they would have recommended. One guy told me that the manufactures just recommend thin oil so your car will wear out quicker and you'll be back sooner to buy another car. Well, they wouldn't be getting my business. Their cutting their own throat if that's what their doing. No matter the situation, if you change your oil like your suppose to and use the right weight, you'll get the miles. Taking into consideration their might be a manufacturer defect every now and then. But the odds are in the thin oils favor in the newer autos. Thanks for reading. Brad

High oil pressure in the 4.7L engine is normal. I work for Chrysler in the Dyno area. Every engine has high oil pressure compared to other engines throughout the entire RPM range. There is nothing wrong with your car. It's just the way the oil pump was spec'd out when it was built. The 5w20 oil was used to increase fuel economy numbers. 10w30 was the original oil of choice.

Fellow Dakota people

I have a 2001 4.7 CC with 260K miles. I have always used 5-30 Castrol. However when I got to 80K my oil pressure was low so I started to add lucus oil stabilizer. Now I use four qts 5W-30 and two quarts of Lucus since 80K and I am now at 260K. I still get 19.5 - 21 mpg. Have 2/3 drop airraid and gibson.

Regards,
Bob

Hello. I'm not an auto specialist of any kind. That's why I'm reading your posts, so I can learn. I just bought a 2000 Durango with a 4.7L. I've never owned a car this new before. It's supposed to have 3,500 miles on a fresh rebuild. I need to get as many miles out of it as I possibly can, so I'd like to know if anyone thinks I should run some kind of metal conditioner in it (like E.R.), along with the recomended 5w-30 oil?? My idea is that I should probably run the thinner oild (due to the engines tighter clearances), but I also don't want premature wear due to that same thin oil. So I'm wondering about your opinions on adding some E.R (or equivalent) to possibly get the best of both worlds?? Please feel free to be honest, cause this is just an idea I'm curious about. Thanks.

I would not use an additive. Just a name brand oil of the proper viscosity range, name brand filter and regular oil change intervals. Witht hat you should be able to go 200k miles or better.

My 2002 Dakota is driving me mad! I am used to oil
pressure sitting at 40 (mid range) on all vehicles
all the time. Truck runs great with 246,000 on the
4.7. Just yesterday the voltage dropped to ZERO yet
the truck runs fine. Either way I am replacing the
alternator, but this truck has got a mind of its
own. This spring I will rebuild this very motor and
it will be my first ever rebuild. Any tips?
