Subject: Engine temp?
IP: Logged

Message:
1997 Dakota with 5.9L engine. 3 Thermostats replaced already and I can barely get the engine temp to raise off of cold. No heat either. I've been dealing with this for years, but lately it has gotten worse. What's going on?
Thanks for your help!

It's a pretty simple system. Not too complicated. Which means there's not much that can go wrong.

As a gas engine runs, it produces heat. That heat goes into the coolant. That has to happen, there's nowhere else for it to go.

With the engine cold, remove the filler cap. Start the engine and let it run. The coolant in the upper hose will move a little, but not much; the closed thermostat blocks the flow. As the coolant gathers heat, the thermostat should open, and coolant will flow through the upper hose. Once that happens, put a thermometer in there and see what the coolant temp is. Should around 190*'ish. Compare that to your gauge reading.

If you're not getting heat, the core is probably blocked. With the engine warmed up and the heater off, feel for the temperature of the heater lines. They should both be about the same temp. If one is hot, and the other is cold, the core is blocked.

If both are hot and you don't have any heat, the blend door is the problem.
