okay, here's my problem. I have a 2002 dakota 4.7 v8 quad cab all-wheel-drive. Recently, the truck started to act funny. When I cold start it, it struggles to turn over. It could take several cranks before it starts. At first I thought the battery was bad, but once it starts, it cranks fine and the battery seems to be fine as well. Sometimes, it will idle by it self, but more and more, I have to sit there with the gas down for a bit before it will stay running on it's own. After that, everything runs as if there was never a problem. Now, also, on occasion, i get a strong smell of gas, as if it's flooded or something. Now, about the same time the above started happening, I started to hear a clicking sound. This sound occurs in idle and gets louder as I give it gas, whether in park or while driving. After a while of it running/warming up, the sound goes away. I couldnt seem to find/locate the sound exactly. So, at this point, I'm thinking exhaust maybe? To add to this, my dad said he thought my exhuast smelled funny. So, now im thinking maybe the cat. conv.? Whatever the case, any advice would be a great help. The last problem I had I came here because of rough idling (up and down) got advice to change the tps (throttle positioning sensor) and the problem went away. So hopefully someone out there has some pointers for me. Once the weather gets nicer here in NJ and I have time, I dedicate some time to seeing where the sound is coming from. But in theory, could all these symptoms be from the same cause? Thanks again all.

the first part of your problem definitely sounds like a weak battery. especially if you still have the original battery inthere. have it load tested. it's free everywhere i've had it done. as for the ticking, it could be an exhaust leak. especially a broken stud. you'll need to do some underhood inspection there.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitley check into the battery. We just got a bunch of snow, so I'll wait till the weather gets better before I start checkin out the exhaust. Thanks again. It sounds like it's probably an exhaust problem.

I am having the same issue as CB (original post)
to the T. Does anyone have any better advice to
give as to a resolution?
The battery is a non-issue for me as the truck
cranks fine, however there is a 3 second cranking
period before it starts and it smells of gas
(flooding) after it fires up. Also the clicking
noise is there, but it goes away a minute after
running the motor. My truck is a 2002 4.7. I
appreciate any help...thanks

I had the same problem on my 2002 4.7. I had the fuel pump changed to the tune of $900, but it didn't solve the problem. Then I changed the throttle body sensor per the recommendation of my mechanic. No go. Then I did two things simultaneously. I cleaned the throttle body completely, including taking out the IAC motor and cleaning the port. The IAC port was seriously gunked up, and had a piece of plastic lodged in it. At the same time I ran a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner (the black bottle) through with a tank of gas. The problem seems to have gone away. But I'm not sure which one did the trick.

I'd pull the computer codes, even if the check engine light is not on. Like the last post said, remove the idle control motor and clean the port in the throttle body as well as the idle controller "head".

I am having the same problem with my 4.7L 02 dakota. Hard start and odd idling. Check engine light came on, got it checked and it was apparently due to an o2 sensor. The rear one. It was replaced but to no avail. Check engine light came back on after having it cleared, reporting some type of computer issue? Im thinking that perhaps because of running with a bad rich/lean mix from the bad o2 sensor, the comp is trying to adjust the mix to compensate. Im not sure if resetting the computer will help, nor do i even know how. I removed the battery for a day, that cleared the check engine light, but it came back on about 3 miles later. I have tried everything else posted here, except replacing the plugs and front o2 sensor.
Im getting terrible gas mileage as well, which leads me to believe that it is due to an improper fuel mixture. Any advice?

We need to know what codes were pulled.
This sounds more like the coolant temp sensor.

So i got the codes.
p0601- internal control module/ memory check?
Im not really sure what thats about.
p0305- misfiring cylinder 5
p0307- misfiring cylinder 7
Now these im not sure if its due to the fact that i need plugs, or has something to do with the computer and the first code. However I am replacing the plugs this weekend so i guess we will see. But any help on the first one? And if the misfires arent due to the plugs any idea on what the issue is there?
