After a particularly nasty red clay mud hole experience, I cannot put my 1992 v8 Dakota in 2 wheel drive. When I try, after backing up, when I start forward it sounds like grinding rocks in the front gear case. If I put it back in 4 wheel high it runs smooth. I really don't want to drive on the hiway like this. Any constructive ideas are greatly appreciated.

all i can say is ur in pretty rough shape im not too sure how ur transfer case works with ur front axel (mine is a 95 and has a full time axel in the front) as apposed to your which uses a solnoid to actualy lock in ur axel u might want to check the wiring and vacume lines on that
sorry i cant help anymore but mine is diff but i know that it could be problems with ur lock in up there (i have pulled many parts off many years of vehicles lol) good luck

Thanks for the replies. I kept playing with it and discovered that if I put it under a load, like trying to climb a hill, it not only doesn't pull in four wheel, but will drop out the rear wheel drive as well. I then coast back down the hill to where there is no pull on the transmission. If I put it in 4 wheel low and try the hill it jumps up and down like the clutch is slipping, then the rear wheels turn loose.

baldorbill sounds like you have problems like up in the transfer case my case was out not too long ago and my first thought was that it was my front diff but if ur losing all drive it has to be in the transfer case weather the chains guides have been damaged and is partally coming off in 4WH and just plain ole binding up in 4WL and binding in 2WH as well really listen to see if it is the transfer case or find a good drivability specalist
i am not going to recomend rebuilding ur self but i have been in mine a coulple weeks ago (with a seasoned mechanic/drivability specialist) and it is actually simpler than the hanes manual suggests lol but much more complex than the front diff just make sure that if you do mark the top of everything even number parts if you have to so it goes in right but i do recomend having someone with a lot of experiance do it or help

also if it is apart you and u find that you need the chain make sure what transfer case you have my 95 318 model had a 231 HD once inside you can tell by the chain because on a 231 has a 62 link chain that is 1 inch wide the 231 HD has the same 62 link but it is 1.25 inches wide how not to beconfused with the 241 which is 1.25 inches wide but is if i remeber right 96 links total in the chain trust me it held me up when i ended up haveing to order the 231 found out it was wrong order the 241 found out it was wrong then finaly got the 231 HD
man i wish you luck if this is the probelm the i know what ur going through
let me know
