I am having the waterpump on my 5.2 replaced. Would normally do this myself but I am away from home and can't work on my truck at the RV Park I stay at.

Removed T-stat due to overheating earlier this year, engine basically runs at normal temp (no pinging/knocking/smoking) but I get no heat from heater - I am betting the impeller on the waterpump is toast and there is no real flow.

Although I am fairly confident the pump is the issue, at 170K what are the odds the radiator is the issue? Temp is roughly even across the radiator, there is evidence of flow at the filler cap, it occasionally spills over into the reservoir and sucks it back out later - so my 16# lever relief cap seems to be working fine. Could the radiator be blocked enough to warm up itself but to keep coolant from flowing through pump?

I suspect the lack of cabin heat is due to poor flow, the upper line to the heater core gets warm but no heat or defrost. Have heard of issues with vaccuum lines controlling the flaps/valves for the heater - any easy check for that?

Also, truck is on original timing set (chain and gears). At 170K I know it should go without saying to replace them since the access is good and will cost me less.

Just looking for basic sanity check about plans and any things I might have missed.

have you tried backflushing the heater core? this is a cause for a lot of "no heat" conditions.

Another possibility could be related to the missing thermostat. Even an working thermostat restricts the water flow somewhat. When you remove a bad one, the water can circulate too quickly - not having much time to pick up as much heat from the engine.

Thanks guys - good points.

I have a coolant flush fitting in the heater line on the right side of the engine (the TO line I believe) so although I have flushed the system recently it was not reverse flow - may look into that although I allowed it to get warm today and the air coming out of the heater seemed warm so I will know more after the T-stat goes back in and the new waterpump goes in.

With the T-stat removed the temp guage reads between 135 and I estimate 170, so it may simply not be getting warm enough for the heater to begin with.

I think in hindsight the issue with the overheating was not the T-stat but the water pump, if the impeller is corroded/eroded like I suspect, then it was an issue of poor coolant flow - what I thought was visible flow at the filler cap was probably bubbles from cavitation in the pump.

Planning to get the pump done on Wednesday so will know more in a couple days.

Thanks again.
