Subject: How long have clutches lasted? IP: Logged
Message: Although my truck has only 50 total miles on it I'd like to see if anyone has had to replace their clutch yet and if so about how many miles did they get out of it. And cost?

Message: I like to hear things like that! I had a Toyota 4x4 before buying my Quad Cab and I put 200K miles on the original clutch. I was afraid that I wasn't going to get any life out of this one.

Message: It's going to depend on how you treat the clutch. I learned to drive on a '83 Honda Civic Hatchback 5-speed, when we got rid of it there were 183,000 miles on it. I think the only real thing we did was replace the starter...
-My- first stick was an '86 Cavalier 4-speed. I got it used with 36,000 miles on it from a dealer that said it came from an old lady who traded it in on a handcapped accessable van. Anyway, the clutch on it blew the throwout bearing at 62,000. But I have no idea if the previous owner had a habit of using the clutch as a brake, a lot of people do (Big no no!) Replaced the clutch ($300) and drove it another 8,000 miles before selling it to a friend.
He said he new how to drive a stick. Boy, was he wrong. New clutch number 2 a month later. He -claims- there was a plastic cap from the previous installation in the system that was blocking fluid. Huh. Why'd I go 8,000 miles on it, no problems? Guy used the clutch as a brake, and never pushed it all the way down.
I've seen clutchs last 200,000 miles. I've seen them last 8,000 miles. It really depends on how you take care of it. Never use your clutch as a brake (by this I mean don't let up on the clutch until it's partially engaging the drive wheels to keep from rolling back). If you can, drop it into neutral at an intersection and let off the clutch. Keep the fluid topped off, don't dump it all the time... should last a good while. :0)

Message: I put 12 years on mine in an 86 Toy 4x4. I decided to prep the engine for off road raceing and decided to put a high performance clutch and pressure plate in it while I had the engine out. I have to admitt that the OEM clutch was still in good shape.

Message: I had a 93 2wd RC 3.9 5 speed, and I towed a 20' fifthwheel about 40k up logging roads. I beat the crap out of that truck. Smoked the clutch a few times getting out of bad situations. I sold it when it had 140k and the clutch was still holding strong.

Message: on my 93 dakota V6 I did not have to replace it until 170,000 miles. It wasn't slipping, but it would not hold in 2nd gear or higher on a hill.

Message: My dad's factory clutch on his 5.0 lasted for 238,000 miles.
I guess it all depends on the driver.

Message: I'm not going to be suprized if my clutch only makes it 50k miles. This is my first manual equipped vehicle and the first 10k miles or so were rather hard on it.
...the rear tires aren't gonna make it too far past 20k though :)
