i have a 97' dodge dakota sport 5.2l 318 but the rear end went out. i have not been able to find a rear end out of a new dakota. the gears are 3.55 and i was wondering if the rear end out of an older dakota would fit the newer dakota. i have been told yes and no. please help all info appreciated.

Can't say what years fit but the junk yard will give you a compatibility of what years fit 4X4 or 2X4. I can only sell you both front and rear axles with 4.56 gears for $800.

Before '97, the rear was narrower. Try carpart.com for many salvage yards together online - there's plenty of these rears out there. With a v8, yours is likely the 9 1/4, which can be identified by it's octagonal shaped 12 bolt cover. The 8 1/4 has a round cover.
