Message: I just bought my AutoLite spark plugs (thank Harlow), but I read you guys 'index' your plugs...what is that exactly?

You should find it informative.

Message: It is where you remove the washer that comes on the plug, and install washers of different thickness to align the electrode on the plugs. These washers are specifically designed for this, and are available at Jeg's, Summit, or possibly a local parts store can get them. The gain from this is not huge, but every little bit helps.

Message: Not to dredge up more "its a hemi... No its not" debate, but what good would indexing a plug when its dead nuts in the middle of the cylinder? If it would do some good, which way would you want the plug facing? hehe
Just thought I would ask

Message: No, I do have a 4.7L. I read the tip Fubar sent, thanks Fubar, great article. Now my only question is which direction do I point the gap in a 4.7? I ask this because the article Fubar sent me to was not a 4.7L. Is the 4.7L the same 'quenching-area' position? Do I point the plugs in the same direction (in perspective to the intake manifold)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Hey BlueBayou, the 4.7L doesn't use true hemi heads, they've been referred to as hemi heads because they're very close but not quite. There is still a flat spot in the combustion chamber.

Message: Joe Blow: That is why I didn't want to get into the "hemi" debate. Whether or not the actual combustion chamber has the infamous hump, the plug is still in the middle of the cylinder and the spark would be equi-distant from the cylinder walls.
Assuming that the heads swirl the air... which they do, there would be no benefit to indexing the plugs. At least on a 4.7 or a Hemi.

Message: Bluebayou, read the article linked above. I think that will clear it up for you. Even if it is a hemi shape there is still a better quenching area because of the flow. That's how i read it any way!

Message: To put it all to rest...I talked to Bernd and he said its a waste of time on the 4.7L, unless its all hopped up for racing. But if you want to do it anyways, point the gap towards the middle of the combustion chamber, a little toward the intake manifold rather than towards the exhaust manifold.

Message: Unless you've done some work to the factory heads, indexing the plugs is a waste of time/effort unless you're wanting that last 1/10th of a second out of the truck.
Factory heads have inconsistencies that may offset the indexing effort anyway.

Message: Dr. Dakota, Blue Bayou, on a 4.7, I would orient the plug gap towards the exhaust valve.
Bernd, I wish plug indexing actually gave me a whole .10 of a second improvement in the quarter!
I gave it try, but only after replacing my plugs, cap, rotor, and wires (yes Harlow, I'm using Autolites). My G-tech times improved by .20, but I would say the bulk of the improvement came from replacing worn-out components!
Gas milage also seems to be improved, but again, I attribute that mostly to my having gone thru plugs, wires, etc.
