Subject: auto trans issue IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 dakota club cab with 4.7 auto trans. When cruising steady 50-60 mph, I can hear the engine speed up, looks like 100-150 rpms, but no change in vehicle speed. Its seems to happen on a regular pattern, every 5-10 seconds. The truck is running great, no computer codes are set. I changed the filters and fluid and same thing occurs. Has anyone had this problem? Any clues??
Thanks in advance

Message: I have a 2001 (5.9/auto) with the same issue. Only noticed it on flat ground at a steady cruise - cruise control or foot controlled, didn't matter. It was subtle, but annoying.
I took the throttle body off the engine and gave it a good cleaning. It got better.
Then I replaced the TPS. Problem resolved.

Message: Thanks bob. I think my TPS may also be part of my erratic idle problem. I didn't know it could be cleaned. I'll take it off and check it out.

Message: The TPS really can't be cleaned. Or more correctly, cleaning it wouldn't have much effect. To fix an erratic idle, you want to remove and clean the IAC. It gets all crudded up. So you clean the throttle body and IAC, and things should go back to normal. The IAC is close to the TPS. It has a plunger on it that goes into the throttle body. Carefully get all the junk off of it using a soft cloth and intake cleaner. Use the intake cleaner to clean out the throttle body. You will be amazed at the amount of crud that accumulates in there!
Surging engine RPM is usually due to a faulty TPS. In that case you replace the TPS, motor on.
