Message: I got my 2002 dakota with 4.7 to finally run. Replaced a head, cams and complete new timing set. Truck started and ran fine, a few minutes later the oil pressure drops to 0. I dropped the pan and found the pick up tube was completely blocked. I cleaned the tube and all the crud in the oil pan. Refilled with fresh oil and new filter. Ran the truck for 5 minutes with engine flush. Drained oil and flush, replaced with fresh oil and new filter. This time it ran good on the highway (80 mph) for 4 miles and then the oil pressure slowly dropped eventually getting to 0. I let it sit a few minutes, restarted. Pressure was normal for 2-3 minutes, 1-2 miles at street speeds, dropped again to 0. Waited a few minutes, restarted and made it home, 2 miles and pressure dropping again.
Has anyone had this problem. Is there more sludge or a bad oil pump?
Thanks in advance for any help

Message: Sounds like more than the pick up was plugged. I'd replace the oil pump.

Message: Thanks Bob...my thinking was the same as yours. I thought I'd ask since so many people have the same engine. After I posted my question, I came across a TSB in my research, it sounds related to my problem. I'll start another thread and see if anyone is familiar with it.
Thanks again.

Message: I had a similar problem with a '99 4x4 with a 5.2 The truck had set for a year. We put 1 qt of marvel mystery oil and 4 qts of 10w-30. Let it run for a while and it would drop off. Wait and restart, it was o.k. for a while. after about 10 cycles of this it slowly got better to the point of no problem. Replaced oil and filter w/4qts Vavoline 10w-30 and 1 qt of Lucas oil treatment (great stuff) Have no problem now. I suspect the check valve in the pump was sticking. It was worth a try because you have to drop the front axle to remove the pan on the 4x4. The book gives you 6 hrs. to do this.

Message: I got my problem solved. There was a lot of crud on the walls of the block, on the inside of the pistons and on the outer cylinder walls. The area around cylinders 6 & 8 were the worse. So I had new/more crud in the pan and clogging the screen. I sprayed degreaser on everything I could see in the block and then washed it out with the full pressure of my water hose. Anything loose or flaking came off. Cleaned the pan and screen and its been running great ever since. The pressure stays around 75 psi under steady driving and no less than 25 when idling.

Message: Have 97 Dodge Dakota that is on the third oil pressure sending unit. The engine gets oil changed every 3000 miles Valvoline 10-30. Problem is that when engine is warm oil pressure is approx 60 psi for 2-3 min at 2000 rpm at highway speed then drops to 20 psi and will stay there for hours on end or until I start to go up a hill at which the oil pressure goes back to 60-65 psi then over the top and down other side the pressure drops again. If I come to a stop and the truck is shut off, I restart it has 60-65 psi then go to highway speed it drops to 20 psi and stays there until slowing to very low rpm or going up a hill. By the way the truck has 122000 mi. on it but has not had a problem until recently. Also does anyone know if the 97 5.2 litre engine have roller tappets or flat tappets? I know that the oil companys have removed the extreme pressure lubricant from their oils as indicated by the symbol of a gear on the oil bottles, so I wonder if my cam is going flat?
