Subject: manifold gaskets IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 2001 Quad cab 4.7 V8. In 3/08 blew a manifold gasket on the driver's side. Had a $22 part replacement for nearly $500 *labor intensive they said. Now the passenger side is gone. Does anyone else have this problem and are they hard to fix on your own? (truly labor intensive?) Got another quote for $300+. It's pretty embarrassing starting it up...pretty loud. It gets better as the engine warms up. OH, and does anyone know how long you can drive it like this?

Message: I had the same thing happen to me on the same side its not that"labor intensive" as they say, one can do it in about 2or 3 hours. Just remove the airfilter box remove the bolts from the manifold and remove the bolts from the manifold to the down pipe and vioala the instalation is the same backwards. just don't drive it like that for too long, the force of the exhaust gasses might dammage the head oh and check for broken manifold bolts they seem to break flush with the head sometimes. I have a 00 quad-cab 4.7 5-speed 169000 miles and running good. hope that helps some

Message: Which manifold? If the intake, then the last mechanic didn't do it right. Intake manifold gaskets are single use only. And the gasket comes as a set. If now you have a problem on the other side, that means the mechanic screwed up.
OTOH, if it's an exhaust manifold, that could be a problem. It's not that difficult of a job. But it's also common for bolts and studs to break, making the job a real bear.

Message: I replaced my intake manifold gasket on a damn cold January day. They say about working in the cold, you can get used to it, but it never hurts less. Anyway, I replaced mine with a reinforced gasket, and at the same time I replaced the steel pan with an aluminum plate. I'd refer you to the place I bought those parts but it was too long ago for me to remember.

Message: Thanks for the input everyone...got the job done for just under $400....the bolts were rusted and broken off so it took longer. Better this guy than my husband doing it; we never seem to have the right tools for the job, no matter how many we have!
