I have a 2002 Dakota with 4.7. I bought it not running. I Replaced a head and timing gear. Now it won't run. Have code 1391 set (intermittant signal from cam sensor or crank sensor). Went back and checked the valve timing, its good, good compression too. Fuel pressure is good. Sprayed starter fluid into the TB, it sputtered but didn't start. Good continunity from cam sensor to PCM and from crank sensor to PCM. Replaced the cam sensor, still no start. I've check the grounds, to engine block, from heads to firewall, from firewall to fender well. I can't find any loose or bad connections.

I've read a few posts where people have had the same problem, even after replacing cam and crank sensor, but I've never read what finally corrected their problem.

Has anyone encountered this? Can anyone give suggestions?

did you replace the head with one from the same year? you may want to check the slotted wheel on the cam that the cam sensor uses. it could be bent enough to hit the sensor or if i remember right they changed the number of slots in the wheel from one year to another. don't know the exact years though.

I replaced the crank sensor today, still no start.

I replaced the head on the driver side, without the slotted cam timing gear. Also, the timing set is new, including the cam gear with the timing slots. The timing set is for the 2002 which mine is.

thanks for the suggestion

I may be onto something. Is anyone familiar with NGC (new generation controller)? It appears vehicles with NGC have the exact same cam gears (number of teeth, TDC orientation) but the tone wheel is different. I still have my old cam gear, it is not NGC. I dug up some info that suggests my timing kit is for a vehicle with NGC. Although I verified the parts store gave me the kit that is listed for make, model and year, it may still be incorrect. Looks like I need to check my set-up, I'll add another post with what I find.

Its confirmed, the right side cam gear is the wrong one. The timing slots on the tone ring is different. The parts store had to order me a new cam gear. Hopefully it will run once I install it. If someone is replacing their timing set, make sure the tone ring on your cam gear is the same as the one you take off, you can't just count the teeth, you gotta look at the slots in the tone ring.
