I have an 2000 dodge dakota. My friend noticed some black smoke when i floored it and the gas mileage has been horrible. I have the 4.7 v8. My check engine light was on but I had it reset and it stayed off for a few weeks but then came back on. What should I check for first?

Fault codes, any time that light stays on. Turn ignition on off on off on (not start), codes will be displayed in your odometer window - ending with "pdone".

I have a 98 dakota 5.2 and it gets gas and spark, it turns over but wont start...i replaced the plugs, distributor cap and rotor...engine may be flooded, or exhaust blocked...
it is showing no codes what-so-ever. No check engine, no codes in odometer window, so i don't think it's anything standard, like a bad part or something...probably something simple tho...
Any suggestions?

Adam, are you sure that the fuel and spark is getting to the combustion chamber? Have you checked compression?
