Subject: Transmission Fluid IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I have a 2000 4.7 liter 4x4 with 58K on it. Had the tranny fluid and filter changed in 2004 at 33K, about 25,000 miles ago.
Was going to a fluid and filter change myself, but not sure what may be the best fluid. The tranny is the 45RFE model, and the book says use 5qts of Mopar ATF plus 3.
I have read posts about ATF plus 4, and even synthetic fluid, so I am not sure what to go with.
Any suggestions, thanks!

Message: You must have one of the earlier books, I think it is in error. My '00 manual specifies type 4, which is what the 45RFE shouls use.

Message: i don't have an auto trans but everything i've read about the auto trans fluid says that the ATF+4 is backward compatible to all the earlier OD auto trans. that's what i'd go with.

Message: Thanks for the info. guys
One other quick question. My book shows 2 tranny filters. A primary filter and a round cooler return filter.
Do both filters need to be changed or just the flat bolt on primary filter.
Thanks!

Message: You gotta drop the pan to change either one so might as well do them both at the same time.
The flat one filters the fluid just before it gets pumped into the trans. The round one is to filter what comes back from the fluid cooler.

Message: Yes, ATF +4 works in ATF +3 applications. I had to make the switch the last time I changed the fluid, and all is well. I always use Mopar brand fluid and filters too. I do both filters while I'm in there. 93,000 miles, three fluid changes, the trans still shifts like new. Use the correct type of RTV on the pan (there's no gasket on mine anyways), and it won't leak.
