Message: It'll last longer if you scrap that K&N for a filter that will actually trap small dirt particles.

Message: How long it will last is going to depend more on how you take care of the engine and how you drive. Drive it like Granny and it should last you a long time 200K or more. Drive it like John Force and you will be lucky to get 30K out of it. It all depends on you. The 318 is one of Dodge's best engines, quality oil and quality filters will help as will not having a lead foot.
Unless you have a high volume oil pump do not use the K&N oil filters, they only have a 92% single pass effeciency, but can handle over 100 PSI. The Fram PH series have a 96% (not that great) WIX has 98% (better) Fram TG series (grey box) has 99%, and the best on the market today is the Mobile One at 99.6%.
As for the K&N air filters, if it is properly oiled it will stop the same particles that the paper filters will stop. It also will breathe better and save you some $$$ in fuel. If not oiled properly I will agree with Gregg and it will kill your engine.
Hope this helps

Message: I have a 94 Dakota 318 Auto that has 221,000 miles. My friends 94 Dakota 318 5-speed has over 375,000 miles. A resident of the town where I live has a 91 Dakota 318 Auto with 457,000 miles on it. Another person has a 89 model 4x4 Dakota with 3.9 and automatic that purportly has over 500,000 miles on it.
Bottom line I wouldn't own anything other than a Dodge. In the 14 years that I have owned this truck, I have replaced the water pump, starter cylinode, brake pads, headlights, and brake rotors. If you change your oil aand your filter like you should it is going to last a long time. The 318 5-speed has over 375,000 was raaced mercily on the street every weekend the firt year it was owned and driven daily over a 200 miles route. His dad owned a copier and fax machine business.
You got to remember that this isn't a Shivy that wears out the cylinder bores like it was made to do it. I once had the pleasure of owning a 3.8 V-6 that was worn out and using 2 quarts of oil every 5 days of normal driving at 75,000 miles. Or a Ford that wears out the valve guides.
