I just got a 2002 Dakota with a 4.7 v8, I'm told the engine is shot but I haven't confirmed it yet. IF I wanted could I drop in a V6? A 3.7L or 3.9? If so, what year engines would fit? I'm guessing I'd need to get a complete wire harness? Does anyone know what it takes to do a swap to a V6?

Why should you do this? Be proud of your V8. MPG will be the same (may current MPG -1)!

And like "No" said, "you can NOT drop in a 3.9"

There a tooooo many electric things to watch out.

My advice - Keep the V8!

Why swap...just the gas milage. I have a 92 dakota with a 3.9 and it sucks for MPGs, I figured the V8 must be worst. If I keep the V8, I'll be back in this forum asking what mods can I do to increase the V8 MPGs.

I want to keep the V8 but gas is $$$, I don't need the power, its just transportation. It would be easier to make the change now if it makes sense.

personally, the only reason i would swap in a 3.9 is if this is an RC you have. if it is a CC or QC i'd drop another 4.7 in it. way less hassle. and practically no gain in MPG. if you have an auto, you can't use the 545RFE behind a V6, computer, wiring, maybe even motor mounts. i haven't seen if the 4.7's use the same mounting as the 3.9/5.2/5.9.

When the engines are new and fresh the v6 will get better milage sacrificing torque and power. As the engines age tho the V8 will take less wear and turn out getting better milages over all. The V8 does not have to work as hard to push that truck around and will wear better because of it.

My friend and I dropped an Olds 455 into a 1984 Delta 88 in place of the factory 307. The 307 got about 15 mpg but the 455 (built to factory 1970 toronado specs) got the car 18mpg but only when he kept his foot out of the gas. When he would drive it hard you could watch the gas guage move.

My 2004 Dakota has the 4.7 and I get about 15 in town and 19 freeway, not great mileage but not bad either. I got about 1mpg by putting a K&N airfilter in the truck and I can help my mileage by not starting fast and gradually changing speeds. This truck has driven across country 3 times now and I found that my peak MPG is between 65-70 MPH, with a sharp drop off at anything over 72MPH.

So for ease of swaps just stick with the 4.7, watch your driving habbits, put in quality Oil and Air filters (unless you have a HO oil pump do not use the K&N oil filters). If you want big gas savings buy an econobox hybrid, if you really want the V6 and are hell bent on getting one in your truck then buy a wrecked V6 Dak that is the same year as yours and swap the ENTIRE wiring, fuel tank, engine, A/C and Tranny, and all computer systems for the least amount of headaches and problems.

OK...I diagnosed my problem and found the entire engine is not shot. One cam seized and resulted in a ruined head (cam bearing ruined). I'm replacing the head, timing chain and guides.

So I'm keeping the 4.7

thanks for the advice. I've read other posts about the high performance cams. Since the heads are off, new cams are easy to install. I've ordered them, should be here tomorrow. I went with the Jeep HO cams. I'm gonna gut the 3rd cat, once I get the dam thing off. any suggestions on the best way to get the cross pipe off.
