Subject: Cranky RPM issue while driving...

When I driving down the road at 55 mph, and I let off the gas, my engine RPM's drop significantly (500-1000 rpms) and then pick back up to almost where they were when I let off the gas pedel. This has been a haunting issue and can't be good for the engine to drop rpms and then rev back up two seconds later driving on the highway. I have replaced the IAC sensor, and TPS sensor, both to no avail. I have removed the throttle body, completely cleaned it, installed a new gasket and still the same results. Can't find anything visually wrong on the engine, and no trouble codes. It's like something is going out and it hasn't shown it's ugly head yet. The only other time I notice fluctionations in the RPM's is when slowly driving though a parking lot, it will surge up and down in RPM's.

Any ideas on where to look next?

Thanks!!

I'm sorry to say this, but I have a big feeling your onboard computer is beginning to go out. I had a problem with my dakota one time when truck would randomly die on me and not start back up till maybe 5 to 10 minutes later. When I took it to dodge, they replaced the computer and problem immediately solved, that is after the new computer got to know the truck first. You've replaced so many electronic items and you are still having an electrical issue, but the way you described it, it sounds like a computer malfunction. It won't warn you with any fault codes because mine didn't warn me, but maybe yours is different. My computer is under the hood and thats part of the reason why mine went out I'm sure. Dakota computers are fortunately cheaper than most other car's computers. Mine was around $180. Its expensive, but cheaper than the usual $600 case with other cars.

You may also want to consider this could be the torque converter causing the problem. When you let off the gas the lock up is supposed to disengage. If this does not happen right away then your RPMs will drop until it does then go back up after the converter starts free spinning with out as much drag from the lock up. Also the slow speed surging can be from the lock up trying to engage at low speed low load. It is supposed to engage at low loads but not at low speed. I hope this helps you

understand your problem. Mine does the surging thing at 45 MPH and higher. Acts like overdrive locking and unlocking. dealer flushed transmission and then keep it two days looking. no luck and no codes showing. They gave up.

Well I picked at the brains at the dealer somewhat and at best what we could figure is that a few weeks piror to this issue, I had the battery fail and go dead on me. About another week later, my rear end speed sensor went bad and when I changed it I also unplugged the battery. Come to find out that with the interuption of the battery, the computer was set back to a "learning" mode, or as Dodge techs calls it "Adaptive Memory" and after leaving it alone and let it do it's thing, it has stopped the rpm drop when I let off the gas at higher RPMs. Go figure?
