Subject: 02 Dakota starter switch IP: Logged
Message: Can I replace this switch at home? Or do I have to have special tools and etc... Stranded without a vehicle please help.

Message: Disconnect the negative battery cable first. You need a Torx T-20 screwdriver to remove the screws holding in the plastic steering column covers. Then put the ignition key in the run position. Unlug the 2 wire connectors coming from the clockspring to access the screws holding the ignition switch to the steering column. Then you need a Theft-proof Torx T-20 socket, extension and ratchet or screwdriver to remove the screws holding the switch assembly and bracket to the steering column. Then just use small flat blade to release the locking tab on the key cylinder then separate the switch from the cylinder.
It's not as hard as it sounds. Disconnect the battery before working around the steering wheel, air bag and ignition voltage.
