Subject: Which route to take??? IP: Logged
Message: I'd love to hear some pros/cons about either buying a used R/T and building a 426 stroker from the 360, or getting a late 80's Dak and going the 440 route.
I'm already thinking that the older Dak would make for a killer sleeper and might be cheaper in the long run. But, the R/T might actually have a chance to give me some handling too. Perhaps I'm mistaken, and the 80's Daks can be made to hang with the R/T in the curves?
I'd love to hear some thoughts both ways! It should be a fun thread :-)
Thanks!

Message: one more thing... if I decided to do this my existing 99, what are the limits of the transfer case? I was thinking that I had to stick with 2wd, but I'd like to make sure that wasn't a wrong ASSumption :)

Message: ok - last addition to my post :-) If I went to a Ram 1500 4wd, could that x-fer case handle a 426stroker? I'm a little torn between a 2wd truck that handles, and a 4wd BEAST :)

Message: Any vehicle can be made to handle, but it may require some work. The R/T model handles better, but still not that good. You'de end up changing springs and shocks, adding sway bars, lowering , etc. So you might as well start with the cheaper older truck and save some coin.
The stock transfer case won't handle that kind of power. For that matter, the stock trans won't either. Better look for something beefier. The Ram parts are a little better, but not sure they could handle that, either.
I would stick to a 2wd truck. It will be a lot lighter, you can make the front end handle better, and you'll save a lot hassle and money.

Message: good point. I did see engine mounts for a 440 in the up to 96 2wd Daks are readily available. What is the limitation in the 4wd model; space?
