Message: Intermittent problem with the rpms going up when I mostly hit small bumps but also happens at cruise speed. Went to 3 different places including the dealership and told me they couldnt trace it because the engine light wasnt on and no codes showed up. I had a jet chip in but I took it out thinking it would help but didnt. Also had a recalled K&N intake that got sucked into my tb but cleaned it out and replaced the intake with with a new one. Heard many things like vacuum, sensor, and tranny but wanted to hear more suggestions. Many thanks for the replies.

Message: Replace both the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and Idle Control Valve, then reset your PCM and I virtually guarantee the problem will be solved.

Message: More likely only need to replace TPS, as daddio suggested when this old post was still fresh.

Message: Yes probably just the TPS, but you might as well replace the ICV at the same time because you will already have the air cleaner removed PLUS the part itself only costs around $22. The ICV gets caked with carbon deposits and it just gets old and worn out. For the cost, it's a no brainer.

Message: Where are these carbon deposits you claim will cake it coming from ? After all, all this is doing is metering filtered air - the fuel isn't introduced until further down. At almost ten years old, mine is still working perfectly. Maybe the no brainer is not wasting $$$ you don't need to ? Only a few 10 mm fasteners to pull the air filter assembly to get to the TB anyway, not so involved a process....

Message: There is a bronze bushing in the motor under the distributor. If it is worn it can allow distributor shaft to wobble causing ignition timing fluxuations. The is a TSB on it from Dodge.

I just cleaned my TB last night and the IAC was caked with all kinds of crap. I just cleaned the IAC with a rag dampened with throttle body cleaner. Looks new and now I get better idle and no surging.
I don't know where it comes from, but it's definately there.

Message: For those checking this post for advice about surging, just be aware a bad IAC won't cause that.
