Subject: Cats rattling...what to do? IP: Logged
Message: Well, Ive read alot of post on removing cats and such and still not sure what to do with my tow rig. It's an 01 dakota with a 4.7 five speed and the cats are ratting on deceleration. Ive taken the heat sheilds off so thats what I figure it has to be. It has the two precats with the 02 sensors AFTER them, then a third cat with a sensor after it also. How can I do away with, or gut the cats without giving off a code? Will the 02 sims work on all 3 sensor connections without throwing a code? Ive even read to take the third and just wrap it in tin foil and hang it up somewhere on the frame....not looking for mods or sound improvment (thats what the race car is for), just want to get the rattling out from under the truck....Thanks for your help....

Message: Well, I just went out and looked, it actually has 02 sensors before and after both pre-cats, but none after the third....

Message: Those are NOT what you called "pre-cats". Those are the main cats. What you call the third cat is there to scavenge what the two main cats cannot process.
The O2 sensors before the cats are part of the fuel mixture/emissions feedback loop, and cannot be simulated.
The O2 sensors after the cats are there mostly to monitor cat efficiency, and can be simulated easily.
If you gut those cats, you will need a simulator, or those downstream O2 sensors will cause at least two codes and the dreaded Check Engine Light.
Do the right thing, and have those cats replaced.

Message: Thanks for the info Benny..now how would you go about replacing those cats? Surely the dealership will want 5 to 7 times more for new cats than what they are worth, so that is hardly an option.

Message: Thats a tight fit up in there and not much room for lenght either, so any old cat isnt gonna fit. And if I move them back by the trans the wiring for the sensors are gonna need hacked and lenghthed.

Message: I had the same problem 2 yrs ago. Went to Lou's Custom Exhaust in Worcester, MA. and he (Jon) could not custom fit anything. He said the shortest Cat he had was 9", but the stock 2 to 1 tube, had a slight bend where the cats are located. He got the new part from the dealer at about $500. The same dealer quoted me $750. Apparently, this is a know problem so they may deal if you raise a big stink. And by the way, it took several visits to the dealer and a few other mechanics for them to admit to what I already knew about the cats. I mourn the wasted heat shield that was taken from me.

Message: One, check and make sure Dodge doesn't have a recall on them. I had mine replaced for free just last year. It's a '99.
There are several after market performance cats available. You can find universal ones that come in just about every inlet and outlet configuration imaginable. Magnaflo and Dynamax are just a couple that come to mind. They all require cutting the existing pipe and fitting them in between.
