Message: About 4 days ago I was behind a car that was behind a car that was behind a van that was doing 42 mph and I was wanting to do 62 mph. When my time finally came, I stepped out of line and stood on the throttle and got on around granny and the rubberneckers. Well, after a few seconds passed I noticed my air was starting to get warm coming through the vents. I shut off the a/c and just rolled the windows down. When I got to where I was going I heard a very strange noise under the hood. From the compressor actually. I thought it might quiet down some after a while but it hasn`t. I have cold air again but I`m afraid to run the compressor because of this metal rubbing metal sound it`s making. Well, it almost sounds like metal against metal but not. Its weird, it sounds like a "wooooooosssshhh" sorta sound. Do I have freon trapped somewhere in the system? Has my compressor gone south on me? It works but sounds bad at times. Its actaully louder with the compressor off than on. Help please. Thanks in advance.

Message: I`m starting to lean more towards the clutch bearing going out. I`ve just got to decide which is gonna be easier on me now and in the long run to either change the whole compressor, dryer etc... or have the clutch and bearing replaced.

Message: I didn`t think to mention before but the truck is `00 4.7 auto.
Anywho, if it`s just the clutch where do I find one? Does the bearing come with/in the clutch/pulley? So far I`ve been able to locate a bearing but no clutch. I`m sure I can find a used one but the clutch seems fine, just the bearing seems to be headed south. This is getting seriously annoying. I`ll probably just replace the whole friggin` thing and get it over with. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Message: Any competent auto A/C repair shop should be able to properly diagnose and repair it.
The Dodge boys will do it, but they will want almost $100 just to do the diagnosis. Parts and labor will be additional, of course.

Message: Well, I`ve pretty much diagnosed it. I took tension off the belt and the pulley just pretty much does what it wants to. Flips, flops, whatever. Best I can tell it`s just as cheap to replace the whole 9 yards as it would be to do just part of it.
Its just aggrevating when you search for a clutch and there`s 9 million hits for how to install one but NOT one on where to buy the damn thing. Stupid, just freaking stupid.

Message: You can get just the bearing at Advance. Sometimes those are hard
to replace though. It all depends on how it is held into the clutch
assembly. some are in there with metal spurs some are just
pressed in. if that is the case it's no trouble and thats all you have
to replace. if it has the spurs you'd be best off replacing the whole
clutch assembly. i have no idea where you'll find it though. try
somewhere like carquest auto parts or napa.

Message: My 2000 Dakota 4.7 4x4 did the same thing to me when I had it. My A/C Compressor bearing went south and was spitting out this black stuff on to the alternator. What I did was replace the entire compressor. I would recommend going to www.discountacparts.com and order one from there. I did exactly that and got everything done by my nephew who is trained with A/C and everything worked fine. A remanufactured compressor with the clutch is $235 with a 1 year warranty and a brand new compressor with clutch is $265. The site says an OEM compressor with clutch is $295 and the whole A/C kit with 5 brand new parts is only $305. My new compressor, with clutch, accumulator/drier, and expansion device came within a week and had it put in, charged with new compressor oil and the recharge kit the next day. Ice cold air again and no noise/grinding noises. Good luck with yours. Mine took almost 2 large cans of refrigerant.

Message: Oh yeah, and by the way, Dodge wants $700 for the compressor and they get all their compressors from discountacparts.com The guy I talked to at that place told me all about Dodge wanting more than twice for their parts! Just some heads up there!

Doing that very thing! Thanks though. Must say, I was getting some kinda mad about this thing but it`s all good now. It`s $300+ but hey, could be double huh?

Message: My truck has just started doing this now. Looks like I have to wait a couple weeks before I can get the parts.
If I kept running the truck what could happen?
I ask as I have booked a vacation with the family. I don't mind the noise but I really don't want to get stranded somewhere or screw up anythings else.
Thanks for any reply's
