 Subject: transmission leaking BADLY

I have a 1999 4x4 V8 5.2 with a leaking transmission. It seems
to be leaking from a drain hole on the bottom of the
bellhousing. There's a huge puddle. It seems to stop, then
comes right back.
I've never changed a transmission before, so- can anyone give
me any advise as to:
1) a good manual
2) tools needed
3) what type of transmission it is (42RE or 44RE?)
4) good website to buy a rebuild kit, or any parts, tutorials...
5) mechanics in the Albuquerque area recommendations

There were 3 automatic transmissions in 1999, and only the 44RE came with the 5.2L engine. Also there were 2 transfer cases: one full-time and the other part time.
First you disconnect the front and rear driveshafts from the transfer case. Then, while supporting the transmission with a suitable device, remove the transfer case....

Is the transmission still working okay ? You're looking at a bit of a project there; but if you're lucky - it might just be the seal for the torque converter. Might not need a rebuild. Onthe other hand, it could be more serios, like a cracked case - in which case it would be beyond rebuilding. It needs to come apart to see what's going on.

No kidding, why rebuild it over a leak?
If its shifting fine then just fix the leak. Generally an easy task. Most leaks will come from one of 3 places. (front seal, rear seal, pan gasket)

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate anything you guys offer.
It's a 44RE. I just ordered a Haynes. So, I talked to my uncle and
the leak is actually from the transfer case in two spots. the
forward seal and the center gasket. He looked at the
transmission fluid and the color is good and it doesn't smell
burnt.
My next question is: do I have to go to a dealership for the seal
and gasket? or do they sell a transfer case seal kit?
Oh boy- how do I know which transfer case I have, full-time or
part time? Are the seal/gasket the same part numbers?

The 4 wheel drive trucks are part time, the all wheel drive trucks are full time.

One way to tell is to look at your selector switch.
It has 3 main positions plus a neutral.
what are the letters on the left-most position?

I am having the same problem w/ my 2000 quad cab dakota 5.9l leaking out of the little drain hole in bell housing, stll drives fine and shifts ok. any ideas? hoping its just a seal,have'nt gotten into taking the tin schoud off yet,am i giong to be able to see into more detail maybe whats going on?

I originally thought it was leaking out of the drain hole on the bell
housing, but after I moved it, it's evident it's from the transfer case.
scott- have you been driving your truck normally? I was curious if
I could keep driving mine...
I'll be pulling the transfer case and replacing the gasket/seals on
Saturday. Do you want me to take pics and make a tutorial?

Man that would be great I haven't had a chance to get under there yet, but to answer your question yes I have been driving it and it acts normal no skipping or loss of gears or anything, it just bleeds tranny fluid all over,now I don't really drive it far,and I make sure I keep a quart of tranny fluid w/ me at all times and check it often.I have another truck that Im driving until I can get into it and see whats going on. I got a 99 dodge dakota its leakin where the transfer case
boltson to the tranny I just put a new tranny in the truck why
would it be leakin there

I got the 44re tranny and I replaced the torque converter seal
and the pump gasket. I still have a bad leak from the bell
housing. Any ideas? How "over full"does the trans have to be
too come out the vent tube? I got 1.5"drop brackets for trans
and I'm just a hair over max line. Don't think that would make a
diff but maybe. Thanks
