Drive my 01 about 15 miles and the steering starts whining. Do daks have bad pumps? 80,000 miles so is it the pump or the steering rack?

if it's whining it's probably coming from the pump. have you checked the fluid level?
do you have a leak somewhere?

could be you just need to change the fluid in the system.

and no Daks do not have bad pumps.

WoW stevedak, Big or wide tires?
front end out of line?
THat many pumps means you've got some issues somewhere or, Your just putting a strain on the pump. Maybe you should consider adding an inline cooler.

OK for what its worth.
Some old 70s Ford P/Us came from the factory with small coolers. We used to hunt scrap yards when we needed one. (gonna be hard to find 70s Ford P/Us now a days)

Anyway this page might be a big help for you.

yeah something has to be wrong thats causing it to do that.. it just has 31x10.50x15 tires and it was aligned six months ago.. i'm bringing it in to let them dig deep into it. before i didnt want to spend the extra money since i only had to fix it once out of warranty but now that its coming out of my pocket i'll spend a little exta in hopes they can figure it out..

Power steering coolers could also be found on many mopar police cars. No problems here, either - 9 years and still on the original. Daddio is right - just because some one has a problem causing failures, doesn't mean the Dakota pumps are more prone to failure than other vehicles.

I know that ford has pumps that like to weep and wail, so I was wanting to know if its the same with dodge. I,m hoping its only the pump and not the rack. Its the first big problem I,ve had with the truck. One trip, it through out some fluid. No leaks in the system and I,ve never had to add fluid. If you think its the pump-should I use a reman or new?

you could always use a small trans cooler if you can't find something for "power steering" pump.
