When I first start up the dakota and turn on the air conditioner, it blows cold air and seems fine. After about 10-15 minutes after the truck gets warmed up, the compressor for the air kicks off. This repeats everytime. Any suggestions?

sounds like you have lost a little refridgerant out of the a/c system. you could probably just top it off and it may be ok. if you've never done this sort of thing before, it can be dangerous. if you're not sure of yourself at least get a service manual before attempting any repair on the a/c.

a 98 should be R134a
you can only charge the system on the proper side

unlike the old R12
where both fittings were the same size
hooking to the wrong one and
BOOM! can explodes in your hand

all is calm
all is bright

I recharged my compressor myself and found out that the can with the hose attached to it will only fit the low side of the compressor. The high side connection is a different size so I don't think the can will go BOOM. It can only connect to the low side. (Where it is suppose to be connected)
