Subject: my dakota is using alot of oil? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all, I have a 2000 r/t with 67,000 miles on it and its going through 2 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles.its not leaking and i cant see it burning.
It does run like crap in the summer if i dont use premium fuel, it pings alot and has like 30% less power.
Anyone know what is wrong with it and will it be coverd on my extended warranty that I have for 4 more months?

Message: sounds like the intake manifold "belly pan" gasket is bad. oil consumption and pinging are telltale signs of this. it may be covered under your ext warranty. i suggest you read up on what your warranty covers.

Message: Daddio hit the nail on the head Dan. If you want to see for yourself, take the airhat/cleaner assy off depending on your setup ,get a flashlight open the throttle plate and lookfor pooling oil in the manifold. If your using 2qts every 3,000 miles you should see some in the bottom of the manifold. If it turns out its not under warranty you might consider a M-1 manifold to replace it. Your 8/80 federal emmissions should cover the TSB Labor operation. If the Dealer gives you any Shzt contact Chrysler directly

Message: My buddy's 200 R/T was "fixed" for this problem by a PCM recall that put on the death flash. It has a small oil consumption problem that we have confirmed is the belly pan gasket issue.
Unfortunately, DCX's choice of correction is/was a software update to pull some timing (to alleviate pinging) instead of fixing the real issue. Pulling the timing cut back on the ping issue some owners were experiencing.
I think you'll be hard pressed to get them to correct the issue (properly) without having you pay for it. My guess is they will "fix" it by employing the software update and they will say oil consumption is your problem.
Good luck. If you get a ruling in your favor it might help others out which have the same issue.

then i guess you'll be needing a new handle. i hope you are happy with whatever vehicle you choose to own. my 30+ yrs of owing and driving different vehicles is that ALL the manufacturers have their "lemons".

Message: stevedak, because your 4.7 is a completely different engine design than the 3.9/5.2/5.9 your engine (fotunately for you) does not have a belly pan gskt.
"almost 3 quarts every oil change."
how many miles do you go between oil changes?
how many miles on the engine?
could be just valve stem seals.

Message: in reply to all, the warranty company i got the extended watrranty from is not going to cover the cost of the replacement intake manifold gasket. They said it actully has to be broke down and its not.
Also I think it allready had the deathflash before i got the truck as there is a sticker in the engine compartment that says something about a pcm update in 2002.
Also I beleive this truck had the oil burn issue before I purchased it at 56,000 miles over 3 years ago.I just never drove it enough to really notice it until i changed jobs recently and begain using the truck everyday.
I will just have to watch my oil level from now on and not let it get to where i cant even see the level on the dipstick when the engine is warm.
That was another question I had, when the engine is cold it would show on the dipstick at the add line but if i drove it and waited 15 minutes to check, it wouldnt even register on the stick.I have used synthetic mobil 1 since i have had it for over 3 years.is that normal for the oil to all drain back in the pan after hours have passed?

Message: don't give up on the warranty yet. You know that you can take the vehicle to any shop that is willing to work with the warranty company and you don't have to go to the dealer. that is if it's after market warranty and not the factory warranty.
Talk to your local shops and see what they can do for you. If the shop says the gasket is bad, and it's covered under the warranty, then you are set.

Message: running that much oil through the engine and exhaust will eventually ruin the O2's and the cat converter. i'd do as Dan M suggest. if not then you could either go with the Hughes Engines reinforcement set or get an M1 intake manifold and never worry about the belly pan again.

Message: There's no reason to assume every PCM update is the deathflash - not all retard the timing. Good luck with the extended warranty company. Parts can be bad, causing poor running with out the truck being completely broken down. Does their warranty specify the truck has to be "broken down" ? I tend to doubt it - might be worth giving them a fight. For example, I don't think they'd want people pushing a leaking water pump until the truck actually dies, before they'd cover it. Don't accept that answer...

Message: the truck has 150,000 miles on it. i generally attempt to change it every 3 thousand miles but sometimes it can be stretched to five. i figured it couldnt be that bad for it since i'm adding oil every week to it.. so with the 4.7 what could cause that much oil consumption?

Message: have you changed the PCV valve? that or valve stem seals or rings. you sure it's not leaking somewhere? i don't think i've seen anyone post on here about a 4.7 using that much oil at that mileage.

The suggested gasket replacement is a new one on me (I'm not a V8 person yet<G>)
But a leak down test could tell you if it is rings
is the engine "dirty"--leak here and there? if leaking is possible, clean the engine and dust it with baby powder. run it a hundred miles, then look for oil tracks.
