Subject: odometer fault codes... IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone knows what the fault codes signify. I have an '01 Dakota with the 287 V8 and auto trans. It's got 144000 miles on it. I get a check engine lite coming on in the morning, but only after it's up to full temp (a few miles down the road). When I re-set the computer (unhook battery for about 30 seconds) the check engine lite stays off for the rest of the day. But then next morning it's on again after warmup. The code I get is P 0455. Can anyone tell me what this signifies to check? I can't find anything wrong right now, and don't think it's anything seriuos. Help is greatly appreciated, THANKS in advance. TakerEasy...

Message: P0455 = EVAP SYSTEM LARGE LEAK
When Monitored: Engine Running. Cold start test. Fuel Level greater than 12%. Ambient Temperature between 4°C and 32°C (39°F and 89°F) Close Loop fuel system. Test runs when small leak test is maturing.
Set Condition: The PCM activates the EVAP Purge Solenoid to pull the EVAP system into a vacuum to close the NVLD swtich. Once the NVLD switch is closed, the PCM turns the EVAP Purge solenoid off to seal the EVAP system. If the NVLD switch reopens before the calibrated amount of time for a Large leak an error is detected. Two Trip Fault.

Message: Thanks OBD, can you clarify a little? Are you saying it could be a faulty NVLD switch or an actual leak in the EVAP system? What do you mean by Two Trip Fault? I'm not up on the automotive diagnostics, can you expand on it?
I apreciate both both responses, thanks lovemy02

Message: Holy crap, I just realized.....the other day I lost my gas cap at the gas pump, drove home...and then I drove it to work next day (60 miles total) (large leak) and that evening I got a used gas cap at the junk yard. That must be what tripped the code. I just checked the o ring gasket on the used replacement cap and it looks good. I unhooked the neg battery post for the night, and I'll see what happens tomorrow when I go to work. Am I on the right track? DOH!!!

Message: NVLD switch is a monitoring switch for system vacuum. The switch is held closed by vacuum. If vacuum is lost, it will cause the switch to open, and set a fault code in the PCM's memory.
Two Trip Fault means if the fault is detected in two consecutive drive cycles, the MIL is illuminated.
Some things can cause this code:
1. Loose or non-sealing gas cap (!!!).
2. Cracked/split/loose EVAP system hose.
3. Leaky EVAP canister.
