Subject: rear end noise...01' 5.9 quad IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
my 2001 quad cab has developed this terrible noise over the past 5-6k miles or so....
the truck has 145000 miles....the noise is very loud with a rythmic groan/moan...that doesnt change with applying the gas pedal or the brakes.
the noise is most noticeable from 20-30 mph's and pretty much goes away after 40-45 mph's.
my rear brakes have never been done since i have bought the truck new in 2001....but i did inspect both sides last night and pads and drums appear ok.
any thoughts before i take it to the dealer next week??????
Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Message: Some added things......
when i had the rear jacked up it was hard to rotate the tires....of course that was with it in neutral and brake off.
rear end fluid did appear clean and up to level.
any thoughts????????

Message: Dodge differentials are pretty famous for eating carrier bearings. Although that usually happens a lot sooner than 145K miles.
Shake the wheels and see if they feel loose. Take the cover off the diff and see what you get.

Message: And how much does a carrier bearing job usually run?
wheels wouldnt give any shaking movement....while lifted....

Message: if you get it early, probably not too much $$$
my 97 howled and moaned for a couple of years, then when a piece of the bearing messed up the abs sensor, i ran it for another year or so. when i got sick of looking at the christmas lights on the dash, i finally decided to get the "abs" fixed. Well, wasn't the ABS at all, the carrier bearings, assembly and whole rear end needed rebuilt. Cost me $1800 this winter. But it has an Auburn assembly now and runs smooth as silk. And I thought the noise was from the 31's.... maybe next time I'll investigate sooner!

Message: Hello again........
well the diagnosis wasnt good at all......just like everything else with this truck....bad.
the dealer said the rear diff is shot ,, carrier bearing has started imploding/dieing/coming apart.
they quoted me a price of $2900$ to rebuild with all new bearings and all associated seals.
needles to say it has new fluid and is sittting in my driveway now. hell if i am going to 2900$ for A truck that has a kelly blue book of 7100$.
I am in the process of looking for a cheaper repair shop and or someone to buy the truck from me....in the meantime we have gone out and bought a dependable JAPAN made car.
oh well .........win some lose some......right?
Any one looking for a perfect condition quad cab 01' with a ailing rear diff let me know...because chrysler will never see my money again. period.

Message: I have LSD and a 9.25 heavy duty diff. I had mine rebuilt this year by an independant shop. He has the reputation with the racers as beeing one of the most expensive around, but also the best. I paid $1900, including a new speed sensor.
