I have a 92 5.2 dakota 4x4 with A500 auto trans.
Recently the overdrive started making noise then a horrible grinding crunching sound but still works. I quit using overdrive untill I could have it looked at. Went out to the truck this morning and put it into reverse and bang grind crunch grrrrrrrr, no reverse....$$$?? Any ideas what went wrong? forward gears still work fine.
I will be pulling the trany for repair but with 375 kms is it wort rebuilding or should I be looking for a replacement?
Is there a stronger bolt in alternative or are these tranys ok when built up. I am planing to SAS it and run larger tires.

Thanks for any advise.

first off, you got a A518 or more accurately 46RH.
Your tranny is shot. probably blew the reverse clutch. I think somehow when that happens it takes out the overdrive at the same time, or vice versa. Its worth rebuilding. the only way its not worth it, is if the case is cracked.

Had the bands adjusted....ever? The rear band may be out of adjustment. If it's badly outta whack, it may have sustained damage at this point.

the tranny is shot like i said... but id say gen1 is probably right too. thats most likely the cause, or maybe its just worn from alot of miles.
