Subject: Oil Quantity for the 4.7 liter
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 4.7 liter 4x4. The manual calls for 6 qts of oil with the change including filter.

If you look at the dipstick, it looks like the level is 1/2 to 1 full quart high.

Are other 4.7 liter Dakota owners going with 6 qts at an oil/filter change or maybe a little less.

Thanks!

That is what my 2000 4.7 takes!! 6qts including the filter. If you are reading over full, you have probably not gotten all of the oil out of the base pan.

How could you possibly overfill it? Don't you know how to read a dipstick?

The object is to check the level while filling, to avoid the overfill situation.
My 2004 4.7 takes 6 3/4 quarts, because I'm using a monster oil filter (WIX 51773) that holds quite a bit of oil. But I always stop after pouring in a 5-quart jug, idle the engine for a minute or so, then shut it off and bring it to level using the dipstick marks.

If the book says 6 quarts with filter, and you just blindly poured in 6 quarts without checking the dipstick during the fill procedure, you deserve what you got.
Hector knows how to do it right.

Vic,

What an idiot...deserve what you got???...so my level is a little high on the dipstick.

By the way, I stopped be the Dodge dealership and the shop manager said always go by what the manual says and add 6 qts. Dipsticks are a guideline and can vary due to installation from the factory.

don't be like jiffy lube when you change your oil and see how fast you can do it. open your oil fill cap, remove the breather (if your 4.7 has one) and pull the dipstick out a few inches. drain the oil and let it drain.. we usually let it drain for about ten to fifteen minutes. remove your filter with your drain plug still removed. you'd be suprised at how much more oil will come out when you let as much air into the motor as possible.

when you fill up your motor fill it most of the way and start it. only let it run for about 15 to 20 seconds and turn it off. recheck your dipstick and fill as needed.
