Subject: Rough idle and stall
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 94 dakota V8 4WD with 130K on it. And I was having a idle problem in the summer heat and after the engine heated up it would surge and just be terrible. Then when I shut it off, it wont restart for a long time.

So I checked the ignition wires (only three years old, the resistance seemed fine in them), changed the plugs and the cap and rotor. Didn't help at all. So I cleaned the EGR with some carb cleaner...nothing.

I was wondering if when the engine heats up and the spark plug wires get hot, could that effect their resistance? I'm running out of ideas here. Thanks guys,
Sam

It's very unlikely that post really came from jjj; appears to have been posted by the site spoofer. Sometimes when a coil gets a break in the winding, it will cut out when it heats up and the ends seperate. You could check that with component cooler, in a spray can from Radio Shack. Also good for checking some other ignition compnents, it worked for me when my Harley was cutting out when hot. If it starts right up again after you cool it off, you've found the problem.

Easiest way I have found to check plug wires - if not using a scope - is look at night for sparking between them and ground or spray each wire with water and see if the idle changes when the wire is wet.

Your symptoms could be alot of things :(

it might also be the CPS(crank position sensor) or CMPS(camshaft position sensor) located under the distributor cap. i am sure there are procedures to check them but don't have them readily available. i'll see if i can find something in the FSM and post it if i find it. i'd much rather check them first than just replace them.

another thought, when the engine gets "heated up" and stops, have you checked for loss of spark to the spark plugs? or is it loss of fuel?

It sounds like a bad battery or like jayb said it could be the coil. If it turns out to be any of these two things, you can expect to replace the plugs again and run some fuel injector cleaner in the next tank to get it back up and running good.

Thank you for all your help, I'm working 7 days this week...so that leaves no time to work on the truck. It's really terrible. But, at least I'll have money to fix it! I think the first thing I'll do is check the coil, the plugs give off a good spark when the engine is running after I first start it. After the engine stalls and while I restart it they don't seem to give off a spark while cranking.

They battery should be fine, it is a quality battery less than three years old. The engine doesn't throw any codes so i don't think it's a sensor, it should throw a code for that shouldn't it?

It's got plenty of pressure in the fuel rail after it stalls and I'm trying to start it. So the first thing I think I'll do is test the coil with that spray.

jjj sorry that some people just can't be happy without being jerks, you're not the douche, whoevers doing that is.

Did you check for codes, or are you just going by the MIL ? There are hard and soft codes; some that set the light, and others that are just stored until retrieved.

Hey, I pulled the coil and sure enough the resistance was way off, so I went and bought a new one and checked it against the old one, way better. So I installed it and took it for a drive, same thing happened. It's 92 degrees out today and muggy. Now I'm dumbfounded...

Try this
After is stalls and won't restart, disconnect the battery completely, reconnect it and try to start it. IF it doesn't start see if there are any codes, sometimes it will set one or two codes in those conditions.

That is a tough one to guess at :(
