Hey, it's not pulling any codes. I'm really at a loss here. Is there an ignition module or something that could also need replaced? I'm going to do a compression test on it next. Thanks,
Sam

If it is the code I think, then it is an internal computer checksum fault - not sure if that would give you the problems you have.

I'm thinking wiring issue - maybe bad splice.

Try this, on a nice day when it is running good, try spraying water on the wires under the hood - a small area at a time - and see if it will screw up when doing that.

Can you check the voltage at the coil when it is running good AND then when it is messing up? Esp. the + side of the coil as measured from the neg. battery terminal.

Now I'm not so sure that was the right code. Here's what happened. It didn't blink 8 times then 8 times again. It just gave me three blinks then five then five. What does that even mean? This is so ridiculous...

Not sure the 55 is end of test, so either you missed one or something is up with the PCM :)

A 1 - 3 is map.

Do you have an auto parts nearby that will read the codes for free?

No, I didn't miss one. I even had my friend come out and watch with me to make sure. Yeah, there's an auto place nearby that will do it, but what will they read the code with? I thought obdII didn't come out till 96...

I've been trying and trying but I still can't figure this out, it's so frustrating. Any ideas on what the problem could be if it's saying MAP?

have you checked the engine temp sensor? not the one for the gage but the one that feeds the PCM a temp signal. i forget which one is which but if you spend 20 bucks on a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual( wise & cheap investment) it should be able to tell you which and how to test it. it may also tell you how to check the MAP.

Yeah, I have a haynes...bought it a week after I bought the truck 4 years ago. It is useful, but it doesn't tell me how to check the MAP sensor, only how to replace it. And that thing is about 70 dollars. So I'd rather check then replace.
I haven't checked the engine temp sensor, I didn't think to check it, I guess it couldn't hurt. But, I just checked the haynes...and again, only how to replace, not how to check...damn it.

I had the same problem with no code or check light. The solution was replacing the battery. Hope it helps

I dont think it's the battery the battery is not that old. But I will take it and get it checked because I still have not completely fixed this problem. It did get A LOT better after I replaced the ignition coil and run some injector cleaner though. Thanks for the help Rick, I appreciate it.

I left my ignition on all night before discovering what I had done. I turned the key off and then started my 2005 Dakota with 33k miles and it started right up and I drove to the store five miles away. When I came out to start my truck it started, ran for a few seconds and died. My wife went by the next day and started it up with her key. It ran rough but then cleared up and she drove home. I discovered that her key runs my truck but the one I have which was the one in the ignition all night wont. What's up. Kim

I found that my 2000 dakota 4.7 was not idleing like it should it would go from 700 rpms to 1500 rpms even at highway speeds it would jump in rmps similarly, it turns out it was as simple as removing the Idle air controller which is located just below the Throttle Position sensor, and cleaning it with carberator cleaner. It was black, covered with what looks to be black soot. I clean it thoroughly along with the throttle body and It runs like a champ.

I figured out the problem a little while ago. I had an emissions line (one of those little 1/8th inch hard plastic lines) broken. I wasn't letting the vacuum through to the Egr. It was a 25 cent problem that cost me two months to fix...
