Message: When I came home my wife said "The water gauge in the truck is low". WFT,, there isn't any water gauge in the truck... LOL Well at least she noticed, gotta give her that!
Turns out she meant the oil pressure gauge. WHOA,,, need to check this out. Sure enough, when 1st started it would go up to 3/4, then after driving for 5-10 minutes it goes to 1/3 at idle, but return to 3/4 when accelerating and stay there.
Now, I know this seems completely normal for an engine and after checking it out I'm not too worried. BUT, I have owned 2 other 4.7's and from what I remember, they have pretty much stayed pegged at 3/4 on the oil pressure gauge all the time, idle, part throttle and with the engine screaming.
How does the oil pressure gauge in your 4.7 respond while driving and then idling at a stop sign?

Message: 01 Durango 4.7 4wd with 100K miles.
I changed the oil and filter last night and it was doing the same thing, dropping to 1/3 oil pressure when idling,,, but today my wife said it didn't drop down and stayed high when idling. Looks like I'm going to have to keep an eye in this.
I've also had an 01 Dak 4.7 and 03 Dak 4.7 and put over 150K combined on the 2 trucks, never noticed the oil pressure drop at idle.

Message: mine is doing the same 01 4.7 qc with 94,000 miles and I got full syn high mileage and I have a small oil leak oh Im sure you checked this but mine takes 7 quarts with oil cooler I had to keep adding and was surprised if you have the cooler check the hoses I think thats where I'm losing some pressure.

Message: The engine's 5w30 Mobil 1 was pretty dark, I refilled it with 5w40 Rotella Synthetic, 100+ temps and it's not even June yet... The 40 weight oil didn't initially help oil pressure loss at idle, but the new oil might have cleaned something out, (sticky oil pump pressure relief valve?)
No oil cooler on my truck, only takes 6 quarts.

Message: There is an oil pressure sending unit attached to your engine. Investigate.

Message: Those gauges could be off, don't put all your trust into them. Get yourself a master gauge, remove sending unit, right beside filter on the 4.7's I believe and check at the source.
