Subject: UPDATE: engine cutting out
IP: Logged

Message:
My girlfriend has a 97 dakota 5.2. Check engine light is on, and if
you accelerate above 10 mph then let off the gas, the engine dies.
Starts fine. I ran the diagnostic for codes and got 12, 24, 55.
From my understanding 12=battery has been disconnected
recently; 24=throttle position sensor; 55=end of codes. I replaced
the throttle position sensor and still experiencing the same
problems. Any help would be appreciated.

I dont have a manual for her truck, so I disconnected the batter for
approx. 10 min. hoping this would reset the PCM. If additional
measures must to taken to properly reset the PCM please let me
know. Thanks.

Did you check for codes before, or after you disconnected the battery ?
It would be more coherent if you kept this all to one thread; instead of starting a new one.

I checked codes after disconnecting battery. Had to put new
battery terminal connectors on it. I left the battery disconnected
overnight, and got the same codes once connecting the battery
back up.

yes, I replaced the TPS and saw now improvement. The TPS
connector is in good shape, the wires leading to the main harness
looks good as well.

for this explaination I am looking at the TPS as mounted and numbering the connector terminals from left to right (1-3). Ok, so I got a voltage of about 5 volts leading to terminal (3). I am assuming terminal (1) is the ground because that had 0 ohms when multitester was grounded. This leads me to assume that terminal (2) is the signal. On the old and new TPSs I measured resistance across terminals (1) and (2), and got approx. 550 ohms for both. When I manually turned the TPS the resistance increased for both. This tells me either both TPSs are good or both bad. Which is it?

the proper way to check it is back probe the (as you call them) #1 & #2 wires with the key on(truck not running). take a voltage reading, then open the throttle wide open and take that reading. now let the throttle return to idle position and the reading should be the same as the first reading you took. if not then the TPS is bad.

what is the condition of the battery? is it new/ old? you may want to have it load tested.

does it do this form a cold start, engine warm or both?

I will try that testing method. I think the batter is a few years old.
I took it to an AdvanceAuto and they said it was fine. Any time the
the engine has cut out it has been cold. I have not let the engine
warm up since the problem started. I will see if the problem
persist with a warm engine. Thanks.

Message:
Loss of idle memory can be one of the first signs of low voltage; when the battery needs to be replaced. When you first start it, you may need to give it some gas to keep it running - it should usually relearn the idle memory in a few minutes if this is the problem. If it then runs okay until the next cold start, it's likely just a problem with the battery. But if it starts and idles okay, and doesn't cut out until above 10 mph as the original post suggested, the problem is likely elsewhere.

Turns out that the engine does not have to be under load to cut
out. When in neutral, and rev'ed to 2000 rpms then let off it cut
out. I tested the new TPS, as mentioned above and got an initial
reading of 5.12 volts, then at WOT I got a reading of 5.14 volts.
Not sure if this is normal but thats what I got. Also I let the engine
idle for about 5-10 minutes to warm up, and in neutral when rev'ed
to 2000 and let off the engine died.

"got an initial reading of 5.12 volts"

was that reading taken at the idle position with the engine off key turned to "on"?

if so something is wrong. at idle you should be somewhere between +.5vdc and +.7vdc for proper idle.

Try cleaning the throttle body for the stalling. Are you sure you installed the TPS correctly? It needs put in slightly wound like a spring.
