Message:
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7 V8. The other day i was driving a car pulled out and i hit the brakes. The brakes felt like they would hit and miss like brake then miss, then brake and miss.

Its not a very detailed description but if you need to know more please let me know.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Sounds like normal operation of ABS brakes in a panic stop. Do the brakes work OK now?

definitely the crappy RWABS. i hate mine. they lock up and let go and when they let go it's almost like taking your foot completely off of the brake. mines done this since day one.

another reason i'm glad i have a 5spd. i can just grab a lower gear.

They work fine when its dry out but once it gets wet or i hit the brakes hard thats when the problem occurs.

dakota owner - I had an issue where if in wet weather I would barely hit my brakes and they would lock up - i would squeal the tires. This happened even when i parked in the parking garage at work, as i would be leaving i'd stop at the gate and they would lock up. They would do this the first few times i used the brakes. This happened intermittently for a few months, I could never figure out the problem... then one of my calipers seized - would not open all the way and was rubbing the rotor- on my way home. I replaced the caliper, haven't had the problem since.

HAVE 2001 DAK 5.9R/T, HERE'S THE PROBLEM, I HAVE A AWEFUL CLANKING SOUND COMING FROM UNDER MY TRUCK
I CAN HEAR THE SOUNDS FROM BEHIND THE TIRES. WHENEVER I HIT SMALL CRISP BUMPS IN THE ROAD THIS RATTLING LIKE JINGLING SOUND EMITS, BUT WHEN I AM APPLYING THE BREAKS THERE IS NO SOUND?? ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO I HAD MY FRIEND/MECH. REPLACE MY BRAKE PADS AND WHEN REASSEMBLING THE BRAKES BACK TOGETHER HE KIND OF PITCHED ASIDE THIS PART AND SAID I DIDNT REALLY NEED IT. AFTER LOOKING AT SPECS.ON BRAKES I COME TO FIND OUT HE DISGARDED THE CALIPER RETAINING SPRINGS. IS THIS WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THE RATTLING???

I had all sorts of whistles, chirps, and clanks coming from my front brakes until I replaced everything this past weekend. New "Powerslot" slotted rotors ($90 each), Akebono pads ($70/set), and remanufactured calipers (about $70/each). My '03 QuadCab now stops on a dime (maybe a quarter) with no noise!
