Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7 with 120k. Last week my exhaust started running really lean and smells like carbon. Black soot comes out when i start the truck up. Check engine light is also on. Any suggestion on how to fix the problem.
If you need more info let me know.
Thanks

Message: first thing you need to do is read the stored codes since your CEL is lit. then we may get an idea of how to proceed to correct the problem.
turn the key on/off/on/off/on(on not Start) then the codes should display in the odometer as Pxxxx. when all codes have been displayed it will read Pdone.

Message: Black soot and the smell would indicate a rich, not lean condition. Check the codes. It should tell you the problem.

Message: Here are the codes and descripiton i have for them. Im only 17 and not fimilar with any of this so any help would be great. I know ther are four o2 sensors on the truck two before and two after the catalytic converter. Im trying to figure out which ones i need to replace.
Daddio i havent really looked under the truck to notice a leak. If i find one i will let you know.
Thanks for the help

The PCM has determined that the response time for oxygen sensor 1 in bank 2 was too slow during testing. (Oxygen sensor 1 is closest to the cylinder head before the catalytic converter, while oxygen sensors 2 and 3 are located further downsteam and are typicaly mounted in or after the catalytic converter) (bank 1 indentifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)

The PCM has determined that during testing, the fuel system for bank 2 was too lean. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)

Message: it's going to be the O2's before the catcon. but check under the hood for a leak at the hi pressure power steering hose. there is a pressure switch on that hose that is known to leak and the fluid follows the wiring harness down to the O2 connector on that side and gives a false O2 sensor code. if that is the problem you can change that pressure switch and possibly clean the connector and wiring harness there and not have to change that O2 sensor.
